“Nine will consider a bid for the A-League broadcast rights as it inches closer to a deal to acquire all English Premier League matches for the next three years, alongside a suite of other assets from Optus Sport”
 
Football Australia and Paramount Australia announced in August 2024 a landmark multi-year and multi-platform agreement to broadcast an extended package of CommBank Matildas and Subway Socceroos' games on Network 10 and Paramount+ in Australia, through to 2028.

Is there much difference with premium? It's more devices and 4k, but does anything broadcast at 4k here?
 
Interesting news that German TV giant RTL has bought sky Germany. They'll be separated initially but eventually one single portal.

Like anywhere, mandatory entertainment or basic packages and the adding on Sport bloody sucks. Give me lean, cheap, simple sport.

It's mainly combat sports but they have 3 European football leagues too.

The Portuguese, Dutch and the Greek League's. Plus the UAE League and some other Middle Eastern competitions.

Nine acquires Optus Sport assets​


Nine Entertainment, through its streaming platform Stan, has acquired Optus Sport assets including media rights, subscriber agreements and social media assets.

Stan will pay Optus Sport an upfront fee of $20 million and a contribution towards the first payment for the next Premier League rights cycle.

The assets include media rights agreements for the Premier League and the Emirates FA Cup, both through to the 2027/2028 seasons.

“This marks a step change in Nine’s digital growth strategy” said Matt Stanton, CEO of Nine.

“The Premier League is the most-watched football league on the planet, and alongside the Emirates FA Cup, this acquisition reinforces Nine’s position as the home of sport in Australia. We are proud to deliver these iconic competitions to Australian audiences through Stan Sport.

"The full power of Nine will be activated to bring new attention and energy to the Premier League and Emirates FA Cup. With more than 20 million Australians engaging with Nine’s platforms every month, we have an unrivalled ability to generate excitement at scale, drive audience growth and deliver meaningful commercial outcomes for our partners."

Stan says more than half of Optus Sport’s subscribers are currently not Stan subscribers. Optus Sport subscribers will continue to have access to Premier League and Emirates FA Cup content through Stan Sport.

Optus telecommunications customers who do not currently subscribe to Stan will generally be entitled to the Optus Sports content at their current monthly subscription rates for the new season.

The additional rights build on Stan Sport’s existing portfolio of premium sports across Rugby, Tennis, Motorsport and Combat Sports.

Amanda Laing, Managing Director, Streaming and Broadcast at Nine, said this is the next big leap for Stan "delivering the Premier League and Emirates FA Cup alongside UEFA Champions League, Grand Slam tennis and our deep rugby slate, in one of the most powerful sport offerings in the country.

"It’s a line-up built for the next era of sport reaching Australians across every screen, and now elevating the viewing experience with Premier League available in 4K for the first time in Australia.

"Momentum is building. With the British & Irish Lions Tour, Wimbledon and the Winter Olympics on the horizon, this acquisition adds firepower to an already blockbuster calendar.”

Stephen Rue, CEO of Optus, said a key priority was to find a home for Optus Sport content which would enable all subscribers to continue to receive uninterrupted access to all their favourite football actions.

"Optus Sport customers and the game of football will be in great hands at Stan, and we know the game will receive the broadcasting priority it deserves from an organisation whose speciality is delivering quality sports programming to its customers," Rue said.

Good riddance to Optus I say. I say that as a clustering of league rights should bring better value for fans by having fewer subscriptions. In saying that, one or two providers only may not innovate or hold customers to ransom.

I agree JS96 on some kind of condensing re braodcasters for it has become a cluster F.
Its been a pain even though I subscribe to many to satisfy my viewing need glad this has prevailed.
Unlike some I have had no issue with Optus Sport, infact even since they picked the WC way back its satisfied my need and its quality.
ce la vie time to move on got Stan anyway so comsicomsa.
 
Would appreciate any observations as to what or how Stan package and price these additions. Surely some early bird offer or maybe they jack it up for all? Imagine you have Stan already and EPL just gets thrown in for no extra charge.
 
Their announcement is about EPL and FA Cup but as many have asked, Euro qualifiers/ Nations League (please don't respond with who cares). Add DFB Pokal, J League and WSL.

Was La Liga shown? Their podcast always had a segment.

I actually went off their podcast as they had the French pundit on for EPL. Knowledable but a French accent blaring through my home while cooking got annoying. Phil Kitromilides was enjoyable but I felt a bit too much hyperbole started to sneak in. Schwarzer will hopefully get another.

Living abroad I have no idea about prices. I see some people complaining it was 25 a month after UCL was taken out. Fair enough but look at that in pounds or the price of two Aus pints and it's really cheap. In principle less value for a customer still but a very easy affordable to get EPL. Heard it was even cheaper as an add on for Optus customers.

Be careful what you wish for. This won't be cheap for Stan so they'll need their income.
 
Can anyone comment on the prices pubs and clubs are charged for pay TV sport? German sky have decimated the pub experience with very few bars forking out anymore. Australia is comparatively mental.

Yep, they'll likely force people into their scrappy entertainment package to cover series and films they've bought the rights to that no one wants.

 
FWIW my German sky is going to go up by 7€ to 55€ a month. This is for Entertainment, Bundesliga, Sport (EPL and a lot more), Film.

Do the math. Go to a bar for one match. 2 beers and a plate of chips will be around 18€. Do that 3 separate times and you've seen maybe 6 games if you hang around for another, in turn probably ordering a 3rd beer. Depends how quickly you drink and how much you want to watch I guess. I feel this is exactly where companies are pricing things. Compare it to the cost of the stadium, pub or cinema. Of course they're calculated for their own operating expenses but they've found a strong standpoint to argue it's still way more value over a month than the same product in different environments.

People here complain about having to spend $11 a month for Paramount + to watch the A League. 😲

$15 is Stan Sport alone - you can subscibe for that only but yer, most people would have Basic or Standard or Pre.
Say you have Premium +SS thats $35 a/m.
