Thrown some names together using Popas formation, i reckon a domestic based Roos could easily compete with an overseas Roos X1. CB the only position with significant disparity.

--------------------Langerak
------Geria----Matthews----Trewin
Atkinson-Thurgate-Holman-Behich
--------Milanovic----------Arzani
----------------Waddingham

Instead of Matthews I would play Jake Girdwood-Reich. if they go for a back four then Matthews paired up with Jake Girdwood-Reich. Last season he was very good for Sydney. He has not being able to get a start at St Louis but he is getting minutes.

Interesting stats on Geria who got found out on his lack of accurate long passes against saudi

YearSuccessful long passes per 90success rate
24/251.8648.1%
23/240.9837.7%
22/231.1132.6%

Has he been working on this?

I love this concept. I'll have a crack at it later.

Yeah I thought I could do it quickly but realised there is a lot of competition for spaces

Just take central midfield, brattan and caceres are obvious choices being socceroos but at the moment I would rate valadon, teague as better and that's just victory

Teague, Borello, Mauragis off the top of my head unlucky not to make the squad.
Waddingham although not ready yet, I feel will be most likely to start for the Roos, moving forward.

How are you going for full backs? That's where I'm struggling.

Bos and behich are the shortlist for the left

Adamson, Atkinson, grant and geria the shortlist for the right

Cbs and cams are the tricky positions imo

My go:

----------------------Thomas---------------------
--------------Geria---Hall---JGR---------------
--Atkinson---------------------------Bos-------
--------------Valadon---Hollman-------------
-----Vellupillay-----------------Arzani---
----------------------Borello-----------------------

A different take. Recent(ish) domestic roos.

My team is quite young but I think probably the best I each position

Bit worried about future cam prospects. U can play Robbie out of position there and volpato is great there but neither wanted to play for us. Bodalato, jelacic and bernando all have promise

Thanks for starting this thread, DC.

Popa rates the AL much higher than Arnie did.

Arnie preferred to pick Scottish players outside the Old Firm, and League One in England. I think Geraint Jones was a terrible choice at RB by Arnie! Look what Geria has done at Right CB!

From all the coach education I've done, the AL is vastly tactically superior to League One and Scotland. Of course it is different with Rangers and Celtic.

I've been off forum for ages, because I've compiled a lot of data for the last three games Aus have played Japan, Saudi and Bahrain. We should have had 6 points, but definitely lost against Japan.

What Popa is showing is that Geria, Caceres and Villupillay, as AL players have been as good as any Euroroos.

Geria's rugged ball winning, and reading of the game, plus game sense and composure; Caceres' tough tackling and passing; and Villupillay's off the ball movement; have seen AL players excel. Because of the NC, players are so used to sequentially playing 4-3-3 variations (3-4-3, 5-4-1, 5-2-3; 4-2-3-1; 4-5-1; 4-2-2-2) they seamlessly fit into national team structures. A lot of the young AL players 23 and under are better technicians too - from 10 years of NC development underage.

There are so many young players coming through in the AL I don't know all of them - yet?

With your combo, I have to admit, even though biased, Atkinson isn't playing well enough at R Wing B - yet.

Caceres has to be DM. He has just tackled Bahrain into oblivion! Teague and Valadon are doing well, but I'm a huge Jake Hollman fan!

That would be just about my team too, except current Socceroo incumbent Villupillay should probably replace Milanovic.

Caceres should replace Valadon as a current Socceroo.

The Hall that played CB for CCM and moved to Auckland isn't an Aussie is he? Matthews for him. Shove Geria out to RB. Kikkanis, Popovic or Courtney - P to left CB.

Villupilay v milanovic is an interesting battle. We will get a much better idea in a couple of months.

Curious who your u20 side will be (all players born 2005 and later listed on the u23 team of the season thread) gonna play in just over a month

CAMs - what I saw of Segecic in the last round for a good half of football, he shapes as a decent CAM to come off the bench for Hollman. He was brilliant!

Aussie scout and petrov have said he, like yull, prefers to playmaker from deep as a number 8. Though he does seem to like to make runs into the box!

I know that people are against it, but this reminds me of my idea that the interstate/interfederation Cup should be reinstated. There are nine Federations and I believe 10 international dates, so a full competition could be played over a calendar year, with the reverse fixtures played the following year, similar to the home championships that used to be played in the UK until the 70's.

It would give meaningful cup like competition to the next level of potential Roos, and a significant number of games for them each year. I am not suggesting a limit on ages for selected players, but there would be a number of young players across 252 players (assuming a squad of 18 players) eligible for the national team. Yes, games against Northern Territory, Tasmania and (probably Northern NSW) would not be competitive, but I suspect any of NSW, Vic, SA and Qld would think they could win it. I am guessing that ACT and WA would be the next level down, but may be more competitive than I think.

It would also placate the Federations with a meaningful source of income through broadcast rights and ticket sales that could alleviate the drain on players' pockets.
