I remember growing up and seeing a forum for literally everything you could think of. Except for sports, music and gaming, forums are pretty much dead and I blame reddit/discord for it. On reddit there is no sense of community, it's not the same.

Remember when forums use to look like this? Good times

Forums are so much better.

I used to be part of a mountain bike forum in Brisbane and everyone migrated to facebook. Such a shame.

You could go into the forum and it was split into repairs, upcoming rides, events, maintenance, different mountain bike parks etc etc etc.

You could just drop into whatever section you wanted. Miss them a lot.

Where I live everyone organises their group rides through WhatsApp groups but you're buggered if you're new to town to try and find out what's happening.

Was that vbulletin? The big ones used to use that. Skyscrapercity, overclockers australia, big footy... looks like they've all migrated to this xenforo thing which is maybe related? dunno, don't really care.

This style of bulletin board still had its place. It's good for when you want a specific community and not have it open slather for every dumb cunt and his dog like FB and Twitter. That said, there are still some committed folks who want to come here and troll the place instead of get a job.

Yeah reddit and facebook is not the same. Facebook too public (people can get doxed) reddit too private, (hard to distinguish user dhifjej127 from dyejdeuehtvdi17e5)

Reddit is good in getting together people on niche interests but it's a blade with a pretty sharp edge. If you're in the tomatos subreddit, everyone loves each other, but if you like cherry tomatos you get lynched. They also tend to be overly positive environments in my experience. Maybe approaching toxic-positivity level sometimes but nowhere near like LinkedIn which is the gold standard for that. Twitter is good for:

yeah Reddit and especially discord killed forums and replaced them. Mainly because people did not have to pay to keep them up, unlike a forum. The old 442 forum and now this are the only forums I still go on occasionally. There is 100% a nostalgia element to them. Like I will always remember the 2002 and 2006 world cups running between the tv and the computer to talk to people on a forum about the last match.

The problem with forums is they're a hotbed of anonymous far right trolls that can't be tracked and traced efficiently by authorities for dispensing dangerous disinformation which can lead to vaccine hesitancy and toxic masculinity.

Social media have effective algorithms for preventing and suppressing dangerous conversations from flourishing.
