New Asian Nations League

Hmmmmm interesting.... still makes travel a pain but if done at same time as Euro Nations league at least Socceroos will be released during window...

Just did a structure - based off current FIFA Rankings, and using the current AFC East/West split (alternating ranked teams from League 1 and 2 of their region)

EDIT: Disregard this - I had a brain fart and put Iran in East, so needs a re-allocation

League A
East 1East 2West 1West 2

League B

I also originally hadn't included North Mariana Islands, as they aren't on the FIFA Rankings. Have included them on this though as they are on AFC's Club Coefficients, and are AFC affiliated - as this is an AFC competition - technically they can compete. Depends if AFC tie this into World Cup qualifying like UEFA does though.

I like the Nations League concept, but not the format. Never liked playing the same three sides twice, boring.

It should just copy the new Champions League format. Three groups of 16, play eight different nations. Bottom/top 4 relegated/promoted.

Issue with that and Asia though is the East/West split.

I'm 99% sure that if implementing a Nations League, they'll go the East/West route, so would have to be 6 groups of 8 (or therabouts for League C)

I wouldn't mind it but there has to be some kind of travel mitigation. It would remove friendlies against other confederations (for whatever they're worth)

Experimenting with players and exposing to conditions would be useful. ME games could see easy access for European based players while SE would be decent for Australian based players.

I like the concept of the nations league. It is similar to how international ice hockey works. Though I think for Asia it would be best to split it into East and West championships.

Yeah this is why I split my concept up into East/West.

Have two groups for each (Randomised at each tournament from the given nations). Bottom goes down, top goes up. Second goes into playoff with Third with the winners going to (or staying in) the higher league.

Do quarter finals with top 2 from all 4 groups of League A, with crossovers still split East/West (League A, East 1 Winner v League A East 2 Runner Up, etc) and then the semi-finals + final at a neutral venue.
Basically the same as UEFA, but with 2 groups for each region (East/West).

The only way I can see this being done not East/West, is if it gets tied into World Cup Qualifying, as I think the ability for any nation to play any nation (with the only variable being the draw, and seeding/ranking) would need to be available, rather than geographic variables (which is why I believe WCQ groups aren't split into regions further than the confederations)

You could always do it for Asian Cup qualifying maybe? The AFC can have a lot more control around that I would feel.

Probably - but AFC also uses the first couple rounds of WCQ for Asian Cup Qualifiers now too.

I means the Nations League exists to eliminate useless friendlies so I'd be fine with Australia being a part of that. I'm of the opinion that there is no such thing as a "friendly" game anyway so bring it on.

TBH, FIFA and the continental confeds really missed a trick by not modelling the Nations League format on Davis Cup tennis instead. That would’ve paid for itself a no. of times over..but instead, we get something that all but ensures some nations will never get to play against opponents from outside their confed ever again(the new FIFA Series tourny notwithstanding, which was a long-overdue initiative IMHO)

Modern day Davis Cup, or original Davis Cup?

Because it kind of is modelled on the modern day Davis Cup.

Issue I have with a FIFA Nations League (if it ever happens) is that what's the point if there's a World Cup already? Only way I can get behind it, is if it's done in a Confederations Cup style thing (winners of each confederations Nations League go into one single tournament).

Yes, OG Davis Cup is what I had in mind.

As for your second query, it wouldn’t be to culminate in another world-championship alongside the WC per se but to ensure that NT-inactivity worldwide is consigned to the wastebasket of history, and just as importantly to standardise the way the FIFA World Rankings function.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m the first to admit it’d be a logistical-nightmare even for FIFA to organise..but I’m dying on the hill that it’d be proven in time to have been worth it.

I remember devising a Davis Cup style draw a while back.

I think I did a couple - one using the nations/modern day rankings, and then one for the last FIFA World Cup standalone game (so, using rankings as of March 2014, and the nations that existed at the time, as there's been a couple additions).

Might have to track them down.
