Weirdest things in football

I would say desperately shameful rather than weird but.. PAOKs gun totting oligarch entering the pitch to confront officials almost brought down the whole league a few years back.....

ooh yeah I remember that - I feel like that also happened in Turkey recently-ish? Or am I just imagining things?

Maybe not the weirdest, but in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, in a group match between Kuwait and France, France scored a goal which the referee awarded although the Kuwaitis stopped because they thought they heard the whistle. The Kuwaiti's protested, including the Prince of Kuwait coming onto the field to protest to the referee. The Kuwaitis refused to restart play, so under the insistence of the Prince of Kuwait the referee then disallowed the goal. Only then did the Kuwaitis agree to resume the game.

So even 40+ years ago the Gulf countries had some control in world football!!!

Ah I’ve heard this one too - I wonder if it’s in any match replays!

Im pretty sure If seen this on youtube somewhere... wild stuff.

Can't be the weirdest as I'll have to have a think but that Equitorial Guinea catch in the box and no pen stands out.

Bundesliga 2 this season Magdeburg Fürth such a case of two hand balls in one game occurred with players picking up a live ball.

Probably happened a lot but Jens Lehmann flopping it out next to a hoarding during a game to take a leak.

Croatia I think where the ball looked to have crossed the line but it was an optical illusion with the defending team countering to score while the others were celebrating. Not so long ago that.

Flekken while at Duisburg drinking water in his net and the opponent scoring.

Stefan Kießling Side netting goal against Hoffenheim.

If you get a chance watch the 1982 World Cup film called Gole. It’s narrated by Sean Connery and it is fantastic - quite moving at times and some interesting snippets of info. It has a short section about this match, including an “interesting” part of the script when seen in light of what is and isn’t acceptable today.

Keepr66 yer remember Gole vaguely though I sure recall who won that WC :)
I did a quick search how to view Gole amazon - gonna watch over the weekend hopefully.

The fact that Russia’s Crimean puppet-state has its own national FA and league(Crimean Premier League) is nothing if not eyebrow-raising🥸

Their FA(the Crimean Football Union) has its own YouTube channel; I think the league is currently in offseason, but there’s highlights from earlier this year still up:

PS. @Monoethnic Social Club ,what’d you make of the standard: better/worse than the A-Liga❓😉

Looks like it was set up a while back, in response to UEFA not allowing 'Crimean' clubs to switch over to the Russian league system. I mean, that's a very 'at face value' description of the situation, given all the clubs look to have been founded/re-founded just for this.

Hahahaha looks very NPL like :) I have to say , in all fairness, the level of play at Aleague isnt that bad in the past few years.... That has never been my reason for not watching :P

Reckon? In that case then, there’s a catchment for visa-players for that tier - and AAIK, our clubs wouldn’t be obligated to pay transfer fees bc Crimea is neither a FIFA nor UEFA member💡

It’s a loophole that NSL clubs exploited to sign players based in South Africa during the apartheid-era, the most notable eg. being Tony Henderson.
