What we can learn from Japans approach to youth development

Back in the 90's FNSW's Valentine Park was awash with visiting jap youth and senior teams. They regularly got belted all over the park by our locals. We were too good and our local coaches were way superior.

And then along came the great bleaching of the local game. SA sold us down the river and replaced generations of respected junior and youth coaches for the lecherous z-rate mercenaries from the KNVB circus. Producing great prospects no longer the priority, that shifted to producing more coaches with badges. The crud that came out of that system remains key to where we are today i.e. massively behind the likes of Japan and others in the AFC.

Can't see us ever producing any players near the quality of the 90's - that period is now long gone.
