Triple M’s Marty Sheargold blasted over ‘disgusting’ Matildas comments

I admittedly don't have much interest in women's sport. If they're interested in playing, good for them and if there's an avenue for them to play professionally then good for them also. At the same time, I have nothing but disdain for certain people who snidely imply that the only reason guys like me don't follow women's sport is because we're some kind of boorish misogynists with a micropenis who can't get laid.

Makes me wonder what the real motives are for a lot of these people's conspicuous support by comparison?

Riff on that last point a little longer.

I'm genuinely interested as to why you think some support is a smokescreen for something else. Like what?

I'm not taking the piss here, I'd like to know who you mean and what motives they have, ulterior or otherwise, besides supporting women's sport.

criticising the 'tillies' is verboten

this is why many have had a gut full of them

they'll probably blame this imbecile for losing 3 straight games at the "She Believes Cup" next thing

There's a certain kind of person, usually middle/ upper-middle class, usually white and (in this instance) typically male, who likes to be seen as "one of the good ones" by supporting whatever causes are fashionable in progressive circles at a given time. Maybe they already have some degree of interest in football (the old Stuff White People Like blog went into more detail of this phenomenon in their chapter titled 'The idea of soccer'.) If they're from the southern states they will have an AFL club because you absolutely must support an AFL team to engage socially in Melbourne society, if they're from NSW or Qld they don't really follow Rugby beyond their old private school team because it's no longer fashionable, and a game like League is low-rent, supported by the actual working class and therefore beneath them. Their main motive for following the Matildas (subconsciously, at least) is an exercise in image-crafting. They want to be visible as the kind of person who follows the Matilda's, rather than actually enjoying the game for its' own sake. Having it known they follow women's football/ bashing other men who are indifferent or demeaning towards women's football is another tick on their 'Good, socially conscious male ally' chart and gives them the dopamine hit of believing they stand on the right side of history.

I dont disagree with what you are saying however the opposite to this is a certain male, late 20s to early 40s, lives at home with mum, hasnt even smelled a women let alone been with one and would only watch a game of football (or any sport for that matter) if forced to at gunpoint, yet spends all their time on the internet "putting those pesky uppity moles in their place". The "enemy" is anyone who their online community tells them is left or woke or human.

Myself, I really dont have any interest in women's sport whatsoever (maybe the tennis if pushed) but see the value in women competing and having the same opportunity as men.. They are 100% entitled to it and its got NOTHING to do with fashionable social movements or which is better or worse whatsoever...

I think the reason such men as you describe make a point of being "visible" allies of womens sport is a counter to the misogyny displayed by their counterparts... The world has become a black and white place these past few decades.. Nobody just shrugs their shoulders and says "eh, sure the Matildas are great, good on them ... now Ill just switch on the football and watch the mens game"

I've never met a single person like that... but I only move in soccer circles. A few could exist I suppose.

The people Mono is suggesting are unlikely to meet you unless you frequent their mother's basement...
The ones that CH is referring to are what is termed the champagne socialists.

The ones who parrot and champion progressive causes but are usually the ones with millions in the bank and frequent cheese & wine tastings and art galleries and turn up at these sporting events to be seen "doing the right thing".

I'm worried Mono, I'm starting to agree with lots of your posts (not all, but).

100% correct, there is no rule that everyone has to jump on the Matildas bandwagon.
I coached a women's AL2 side & all the women love the Matildas, my dear old Dad watches every Matilda's game, he loves them.
I'm a bit more interested than you, I watch some Matildas games & occasionally some of the highlights (3mins) of the league in England to see how some of the Aussies are playing. But, no I much prefer the men's game, but I don't dish on the women's game. I think it's great.
People in this country have to understand in many countries around the world women are still very much 2nd class citzens.
We in Australia have come along way, but recent events show we have so far to go still.

Indeed. The people I describe and the people mono describe both definitely exist. In fact, there are a number or archetypes I could write about at length (pattern recognition is definitely a thing).

Back in the 90's there was this graphic depicting a cat and a rooster facing off like they were about to fight, with the rooster saying 'Pussy!' and the cat saying 'Chicken!'

Imagine a graphic where the person I describe and the person Mono describes are both sitting behind their respective computer screens, except one is saying 'Simp' and the other is saying 'Incel'...

HAHAHAAH holy shit, the world is coming to an end if we start agreeing mate... lol

Yeah Im with you, its as simple as that... I feel like the people that are most vocal in putting down women's sport are similar to the ones jumping up and down about homosexuality or social welfare or any other "cause" they dont agree with.. Its got nothing to do with the actual sport .. I mean women's football has come leaps and bounds in the past 5-10 years in quality and really, WWC matches weren't that different in quality on the field than some bog average men's national leagues out there .... and its only going to get better...

exactly right.... totally off track conversation but ideological disagreements were a lot easier to navigate before this whole "anonymity of the internet" bullshit started (he says while hiding behind a user name on a football forum  )

What I feel this has brought about is a massive increase in POLAR opposite opinions.... 40 years ago for example, a bloke could have said "I dont like sheilas playing football, its crap" and the whole comment wouldn't turn into a 400 post diatribe on where you stand between Kamala and Trump... lol

The issue is in the last 20-30 years we've observed the worst aspects of American & British culture and adopted it as our own.

Especially in the last 10 years or so.
