World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

You can play friendlies against non European teams. We managed to play 6 in 2023 between the Asian Cup and the start of qualifiers and 5 were against teams that qualified for the world cup.
The AFC should make up a comp like the UEFA Nations League which was created to eliminate useless friendlies and provide European competition.

My squad for the final window. I know Popovic will pick Caceres so I don't know even if I should omit him. We need a lot in midfield for both games. A lot are injured or don't warrant a call up.

Ryan, Gauci, Izzo

Miller, Geria, Circati, Burgess, Degenek, Rowles, Iredale, Behich

Balard, Triantis, Nisbet, Teague, Luongo Metcalfe, Segecic, O'Neill

Goodwin, Boyle, Velupillay, Taggart, Irankunda, Botic, Iredale

Is Mo Toure fit? Of course I'd have him. Advancement is very much contingent on the Saudi Bahrain result. We should try to avoid defeat against Japan so Saudi need to attack Bahrain and expose themselves.

he was injured but who knows how bad

More games against japan south korea and iran would be very welcome
If we had a nations league like Europe you have just mentioned all the likely pot 1 teams and we wouldn't get to play any of them. AFC has enough competitive games as it is IMO. There are plenty of decent Asian, African and South American teams to organise friendlies with. Last friendlie year we played Ecuador (2), Argentina, Mexico, England and New Zealand. Every window since has been filled with competitive matches.

Yep, if they brought in the Who Cares Cup, might as well just have it replace world cup qualifying and the continental cups, and the top league of each cycle qualifies for the World Cup.

And how did it help the squad and Arnie? bottom of group and sacked.

You don't learn anything playing England and Argentina in friendlies cause they play their B squad like England did and the friendly in China was about money.

They won 6 qualifiers in the 2nd round.

Alex Gerbach has been excellent at LB for WSW in A League also.

AFC wanted to but Japan didnt wana take part of it.

Make sense tho Japan has been playing friendly against teams like Colombia, Uruguay, Germany, Turkey etc. Why would they wana play against Iran, Qatar, sth Korea, Australia, Saudis, Uzbek, Iraq, Jordan etc in AFC Nations League? Its not exciting for them anymore.

Are there any articles or sources to gauge the discussion from the Japanese perspective?
