2025 Australia Cup final rounds thread

Absolutely they can, but the onus is on the defender to make sure when they do they aren't a chance of hurting someone.
Does an attacking player doing a bicycle kick check everyone else is safe too?

I don't know man. Just seems like leading with your head is going the wrong way to go for protecting the head. Feet above shoulder height I get, they obviously don't belong there in the realm of the head. But if you're leading with your head below that, then you need to learn how to protect yourself from harm. It's like some players in AFL, let's say Selwood, he would go head first into contests for free kicks, no regard to having CTE for the rest of his life.

I might be on my own here haha, but I just think players need to protect their own heads.

I get where you are coming from mate... My understanding (and I am probably way off) of dangerous play is anything that would potential injure another player... Raising your leg like a ballerina to trap a ball when you have acres of space around you would NEVER be called.. or would having a dink at a scissor considering you can see what in front of you ....

Raising the studs in a crowded penalty box though.... is another thing all together.....

I just think it's daft that there's a difference between a high boot in a Puskas worthy bicycle kick goal and a potential red card if someone throws their head in there from nowhere.

Can defenders clear the ball via a bicycle kick and it's all good?
Straight from Law 12:

A scissors or bicycle kick is permissible provided that it is not dangerous to an opponent.

In last nights game, a defender did not try to get his head to the ball when the SH player attempted the bicycle kick (although it looks like the nearest defender did move away when he saw the SH player going for the bicycle - is this a grey area in that a player didn't challenge with his head to avoid potential injury?).

There was an EPL player who dived to head a ball and got done for dangerous play some years ago.

The dangerous play also included being a danger to yourself.

The funny thing about the rule is that the opponent has to pull out of the challenge if you dive head first because otherwise he is seen as performing the dangerous play (kicking in the vicinity of a head). How often do players pull out for safety and since there is no contact the ref calls play on...?

All great responses, I'm trying to get my head around it all, pun intended haha.

Excellent find. And this just confuses me. You make the decision to do a bike/scissor with no one in danger. You start executing the bike/scissor with no one in danger. Then mid execution, some bozo comes flying in with their head. I can't see how the kicker is ever at fault there.

Anyway, cheers for chat folks ⚽

My take would be that the scissor kicker would need to be aware that there is no player in the vicinity that could reach the ball or the foot.

Given the key outs for South Melb this playing style was expected! Good game overall..

Not a year, some good teams heading down in a few months Marconi, Wollongong and especially Heidelberg should have you excited!
Great!

I've never had to walk so far at KGV from my car, as the crowd appeared to be the biggest yet, but it showed up KGV as having inadequate spectator facilities.

That artificial surface at KGV is a good playing surface. I've coached on it twice a week in some seasons.

Valid points but explainable ones... Last night saw us VERY flat accross all 3 lines, Left side 1/2 back Inglese was a makeshift replacement for our normal captain who is the better ball carrier of the two CBs THUS Javi having to go the "boot" more often than not.

1st goal was very indicative of our high press, quick pass, run into the box scoring of late, a fine move and Bonadas second goal was his poure paocher instinct at best display.... We had a couple of near misses and clear cut handball in the box penalty (not to mention this bizarre call on a high boot to the head in the box which was given as a indirect???) not given..

But goal of the night was that audacious scissor..... Please tell your daughter to p ass on this old Hellas fans absolute congratulations to that young man .. the cheek on him... well done, hell remember that one for a lifetime....

Well organised by South Hobart.... sad I didnt make it down for the match, looked like a fun crowd..... I have no doubt they will make a worthy addition to the Championship soon and will be visiting often.
Unless in the small stand at KGV where the viewing is excellent, or next to the fence, spectator viewing was poor.

If that number 3 for SM, who is a bit balding, is a makeshift LB, he did a very good job.

I had a poor viewing position, but thought SM didn't Full Press and Squeeze intensively enabling SH to play out at times.

I thought SH 's Gorrie at RB was nervous at first and mishit a bit. Gorrie is usually a decent player - more of a football athlete than a technician.

My daughter (who knows a lot about football) and I disagreed about SH's Alex Walter's performance, but she had a much better viewing position.

I've seen quite a few Tas NPL games recently and believe the league has improved quite a bit. Mainly that the lowest ranked teams on the table appear quite a lot better.

Not sure where SM are on the ladder in NPL1 in Vic ATM? I tend to think of them as one of the top NPL teams in Aus. The best I've seen SM play was against SFC in a National Cup semi-final.

Nothing like live football at a reasonable standard!

South 2-1 up just before halftime.

Mono will be happy.
I wasn't happy!

After SH going 1 up from the bicycle kick goal from KK, I didn't expect the Tassie team to be behind at the break.

It wasn't too bad a winter night in Hobart. It seemed mild when SH were leading, but I started to feel the cold as those 2 SM goals went in!

Will the KGV ground be used as south hobarts venue you think or is there another option?

You are right we did NOT full press, at least for the first 1/2 hour orso.. very lethargic from us. Probably our poorest game in the past 2 months. SMFC are slap bang on the tail end of a brutal season, currently just out of the relegation zone... SH did very well but the second half was very comfortable for us and rotated players with one eye on the coming weeks busy schedules...

Our travelling fans all had nothing but praise for the hopsitality and facilities... Many NPL grounds up here are no better/worse than that... Football is better down in the weeds.

its a awful day here in Perth , storms in the nothern corridor and its only like 8-10 degrees , freezing for perth standards even in winter been really heavy rain all day so far , going to be interesting to see how the ground is looking and conditions

Anyone watching them?
I had not realised they played today - so thanks for the nudge mikes27091 and MCG.

Not on Paramount+ and I could only just find it now by drilling down into 10Play - Australia Cup - Australia Cup fixtures list.

Saw the highlights of the first half and watching the second half now. Ugly looking day indeed.

Commentators just explained why Glory v Roar Australia Cup knockout game players are not cup tied.

It is because the game related to last season - determining who would get to compete in the Australia Cup this season.

Actually makes a bit of sense (sorry Mono).

Nix 0-1 up still at the hour mark.

Risdon for Glory is making a lot of poor decisions and having a lot of poor touches.

Nix playing just like they did last season. Hold the two defensive lines, press high 1v1 when they choose to and press in numbers when it comes into their half. Glory making too many mistakes trying to work through the press and getting exposed but other than that it is quite an even match.

Nix with the advantage and not looking too worried too often.

Taggart equalises as soon as he comes on (within a few minutes anyway) - 89th minute.

And 1-1 at end of normal time. Going to extra time.

Oli Sail with a fumble in the box right at the death. Could have been a disaster but his defenders covered for him.

Lightning break in extra time - barely underway and now a half hour break or so to come.
