Agree.

Wish we could get into Portugal too. The league is usually ranked similarly to Netherlands and Belgium, but we've had less success with Aussies playing in Portugal.
Portugal is a black hole for Aussies. Steer clear I say, unless there are family links. Traore is the only player to make a go of it there that I can recall, and he's a naturalised Australian.

Unless you've got the cultural heritage ala Grella, Bresciano, Kalik, anywhere south of Austria is Switzerland just doesn't work. Makes you wonder why they even signed Australians to begin with.

I'd love someone to as the Cadiz manage then and now what on earth he ever wanted with Mabil. Mabil was of the grade at the time with his career form and UCL tag, but they just hoarded him.

Wouldn't mind hearing what even happened with Teague there. Decent education I suppose but information was scarce.

Ryan with some passing distribution. Sampdoria not much tonight. Roma up 2:0. I wonder how Ranieri sees the keeper battle as Svilar has been complacent and ordinary in all departments for weeks and maybe Ryan adds a spark and hopefully a better understanding and link with the defence.

3:0 Roma. It's not even a game currently.

Meh 3:0 up. Sampdoria get through and Roma player nudges it swiftly towards goal line risking a corner. Ryan slides to clear the ball to prevent a corner. It goes to an opponent but he's quickly smothered. Could be looked at a few ways in what it a training match for Roma here. Second half in a cup may see more Sampdoria attack.

Stoked for Maty. Here’s hoping Ranieri is kinder to him than the previous manager.

I feel his knowledge of the English game should see some respect towards Ryan. Ranieri knows not everyone makes that grade not to mention Ryan's Alkmaar time in Europe was solid.

Cup game against a second tier side here but Ryan at least looks more assertive than Svilar is distribution. Svilar concedes in similar fashion to Ryan so it may come down to chemistry with the defence and distribution.

Ryan and Aloisi in Spain are the only ones to get past it. They learnt the language. I wonder if the others did?

Sampdoria score. Dream first touch in the gap between the defenders and easy slot to the left. Nicely taken. Ryan powerless there. His partner shown on TV with her surprise and she was busy on her phone. German commentator doesn't know who she is of course.

Very small chance of it I think. It goes a long way. At the same time I highly doubt other foreigners there necessarily learn the language. Comes down to the individual.

It's got to be the technical respect too. Spain won't rate out players but northern Europe appreciate the robust style and work rate. Nevertheless our players were signed down there so was it just good agent marketing or conviction the player was able?

Ryan rated only 5.9 on FotMob. Was he that bad?
3/7 long balls being won by team mate puts it down a notch I think. I mean you play a long high ball and the opponent heads it out for a throw. Computer stats lack context at times. One point blank goal conceded and only slide clearance landing at an opponent and there's the number.

The distribution was quick but annoyingly the centre backs wanted every goal kick only 1m away and it adds unnecessary pressure to everyone. Don't get the risky obsession with having it at the back.

It will depend on how the technical director wants the football to be played at the club.
A team playing the ball from the back wouldn't consider it being risky. They would see their style of play as being normal as they train that style of play over and over and over.
A top centreback is essential though.

That's true. It is certainly one way of playing. I guess what happens is some teams play it when they can't and that's where the errors occur. I can't stand it when it's played and it's not within their ability. Their errors make them look ridiculous.

It's also interesting how some opponents may be submissive and just stand deep and let the team play out. In turn, others suss it out a block high and unsettle them.

Heavy pressing is when you see the talented players that make playing from the back look easy.
Tottenham struggle when they are pressed heavily under Ange's system for example.Half the time the build up breaks down.
When you hold the ball you control the play. That's the ultimate aim in that risky play style.

My son's team play this way.
I watch them train over and over it's almost like watching a dance choreography. They'll practice each play identical many times over each week with many other variable plays also practiced many times.Starting from the back and working themselves to the other end of the field.
So in a game each player knows where to be and what the next move will be in the hope that in a game that one or two of these choreographed plays work and lead to a goal.
