A-League Mens 24/25 - Round 13

If you slow the play down, pass safely backwards when you have options forward, and clog up your opponents when they get in your half you can hide a lot of weakness with a low score line.

I do not believe we are the banana skin for anyone as we are at the moment. It is not a matter of bad luck - although a clearance on the goal line in the opening minutes may give that appearance.

We are simply refusing to put any fast attack on goal and allowing our opponents to both apply a high press and still have time to get back and defend in a block. Bloody mindless strategy.

Quinn MacNicol was lively when he came on. He is listed as a midfielder but he plays more like a striker who works hard to be in position and is always looking for something. Give him the position to learn and grow in. He provides a target - not as the big hold up central striker but as the nippy bugger who runs into space and in behind.

Zimarino was a lifeless hulk most of the game. Summed him up nicely when the commentator said 'and there is Zimarino lumbering into the attack' - but he actually contributed well late in the second half around the time MacNicol came on and he (Zimarino) moved wide right. Provided some very good passing links to the forward line.

Jelacic has me totally confused. I watched him pre-season and he was lively, enthusiastic and dangerous. I have not seen any of that in the season proper really. He is sluggish and looks to me like he may have been doing too many weights and lost his mobility. I am struggling to see anything he does that any other player wouldn't do. I am sure he has more to offer but why are we not seeing it on the pitch?

Glad to see Neville back. I would like to see Herrington and Neville as our two central defenders as soon as Neville has the legs for 60 minutes.

Brazete continues to be a threat and forces two players to defend him all game. He can turn and hold under close attention of multiple players. How the fuck can it not be a card when your opponent rips the front of your shirt open? How can the ref not say 'hmm - maybe that was a professional foul'.

I did not mind Zabala again in the midfield - although as soon as City took the ball deep into our defence his slow pace off the mark showed him up again. He seems to fit into a central midfield role a lot more effectively than a defensive role but in being like that he is half a really good central midfielder and that is fine for a bench or squad player.

Klein was lively and effective again. I like what he brings.

City were probably the unlucky ones to only score one. They had a few good chances that could easily have been goals and like most sides they are able to bring the ball forward from deep in a smooth, cohesive movement that results in some sort of pressure on goal.

We are able to string passes together under pressure and play through a press - but it is a pointless exercise. At some point we go backwards again rather than maintaining the attack and Freke is involved in far too much of our play. We are basically using him as our number 6 starting to bring the ball out - and that is a pretty damning thing for a team to use their goal keeper as the start of everything. It ties in with slowing the play down to limit opportunities for our opponents I think and it is clearly Zadkovich's idea to bring the 90 minutes as low as he can while in safe possession. I feel Graham Arnold's DNA in our methods.

I reiterate what I said after last game - if we put our best young players and our best performing players in positions they are good at, and drop the players who aren't performing, we have a good team capable of winning games.

Halloran, Jelacic or Zimarino, Berenguer, and Bility all out (I still like Hingert despite his wayward passing and being beaten too easily at times). I would think somethignlike this line-up and stick with it until someone else proves themselves worth taking a spot:

--------------------------Freke
Hingert Herrington Neville Burke-Gilroy
--------------------------Shour
---------------O'Shea
Jelacic/Zimarino/? Klein Brazete
-----------------------MacNicol

Such a difference a good coach makes. Watching ccm, they are also in a rut, but u just know that once this team has 50 games together they will be back on top
Roar seem to be going backwards

Call me impatient but I want Segecic in the national team squad now. At least ahead of Hrustic. The lower age batch still have maturing to come. They're actually pretty raw. Yet picking a few would send some strong intentions through the camp. It's not like they're not ready and anything to keep the slackers on their toes.

Pretty unlikely but Botic is maturing and filling out now and Goodwin, Jovanovic, Waddingham are so young and look great. They're doing things that Duke was doing to warrant selection (scoring goals) so I'd be pretty keen to see them in sooner than later.

It's his own accord but I feel not bringing someone like Iredale into the national team early and regularly sees them fade. Make these players part of the set up regularly.

You lost me when you said that you still like Hingert - you just described what he brings to the team - wayward passing & getting beaten everytime he's 1 v 1. He needs to retire. Agree about Klein, he's been a great find. Totally disagree with Jelacic assessment - he's doing his best, but is surrounded by substandard teammates

Thought I'd jinxed him with the poor shot but now 2 for Segecic. Move abroad only if he's nailed on as a gem for that club. He's got to play all the time.

I appreciate Grazor showing the Milanovic assessment that he'd lose a lot of ball at a higher level. It's interesting to note Milanovic is now ineligible for the Olyroos? Hit the straps very well after the eligible age.

Woah a hat trick for Segecic and what a goal. Popovic there. Got to include him in the March 26.

A few players hit their straps around u24-u26, nisbet, stama, oniell balard for example, they can still have decent euro careers

Got a crew cut yesterday but I was pulling my very short hair out writing that squad in the WC thread.

Midfield stacked. I'm just annoyed how many open questions we have with promising players not getting a go vs Brattan, Caceres et al confirming what we know. I get Grant and Degenek were there for cover and to see them in the system but neither were realistically going to play. Grant in that last squad was a wasted spot when we named Miller, Geria and next time we should have Metcalfe and maybe Baccus.

Segecic has big potential to become a top player, especially only at 20 years of age.

I think the loan spell in Holland has did wonders for him, I would like to see clubs do something similar if they have a prospect that needs quick development.

Really like our young players doing stuff like that. Lower tier Euro for a year or two to learn some things the either come back or move up on the continent.

It's more the club model. We need to avoid big clubs or hoarding culture types ala Gladbach.

Would love some of our young players to enter German 3rd tier with 20 clubs. Aachen with their ground and culture would be cool.

Especially with no NYL it makes sense, if they can’t play regularly in the aleague and if they are not ready yet then take advantage of overseas especially 2 or 3rd tier just to gain experience.

Some new faces are likely to appear in this week's u23 team of the season

I might do a u20 team of the season for a few weeks since the u20 asian cup is coming up

Bringing back a nyl would turbo charge our development

I like Hingert probably because he is the closest thing we have to a loyal old club hero type. He plays for the club and gives his all. From my perspective, he doesn't stuff his passes every time and he doesn't get beaten every time on 1v1 - but it does happen every game. I think he is better than Brown and I don't want Zabala there so I put Burke-Gilroy on the other side and left Hingert at right fullback. I know I am a minority but I find his positives still outweigh his negatives.

Jelacic looks like he is running in second gear all game every game now. That is the point I am making. I can't remember him just taking the ball and going for it like I have seen him do. Everything is super-controlled instead of instinctive with his play now. That is why I am confused about him. He is not doing what makes him such an exciting player anymore.
