..’allow’ or want’… two different things, but then, as we know, FFA had abdicated responsibility for professional football in this country.

The way I see it is they have abdicated responsibility for franchise football in this country (and New Zealand) this has brought about the resources and desire for them to focus on

"We did it because we want to ensure we continue to evolve the game in Australian football," Football Australia chief executive James Johnson said on Tuesday.

"We wanted to fill the gap between the NPL and the A-League. We wanted to stretch clubs that are currently playing in the NPL that we think can take the next step so that they grow. We wanted to provide a platform for young Australian players to play more minutes, coaches to get more experience at a higher level, and referees and administrators to also [work at] a higher level as well.
 
For me, the format seems stupid.

Year 1, go with the 8 team comp, each team plays each other home and away, 14 games + finals.

Towards the end of year, can asses hows it going and make decisions based on state of comp.

Year 2, add either 2 or 4 (even 6 is demand is there) teams and have a 10 or 12/14 team comp.

Year 3, add another 2 teams, and dangle the carrot of promotion. Top of NSD plays Bottom team in A league in a 2 legged playoff.

Is it that hard? Or is money the issue?

Are you referring to FFA or FA? FFA had the responsibility for overseeing ALL football from 2004(?) and was replaced by FA in 2020(?) who have the responsibility for administering all football except for the professional league.That is where FFA ceded responsibility to Fox Sports.

The FFA and FA are the same thing just a different name.

It's not like the old corruption riddled Soccer Australia that the FFA replaced.

To you it may be just a name change but to me there are many differences in the way the organisation is run.
The Lowry run FFA was happy for others to run football where as FA, particularly under James Johnson, has a ‘hands on’ approach. That is a huge difference.

I think its more reading between the lines.. The ESPN articles mentions 4 groups, headed by APIA, Marconi, South and Avondale, also mentions WA and SA together and and not having foundation clubs from same state in same group .. Just Guus having a crack at what it may look like.

yes and no .... adding the "extra" 8 clubs gives it a whole of the country feel and adds to the pressure some other possible participants may get from their members once (if) this is a resounding success... If Melbourne Knights, as an example is the VIC club that wins participation and does well in the comp don't you think the Knights members will be screaming for participation the following year?

Having 16 clubs in year one also sends a shot across the bows to the quaint little Aleague... :P

NOPE, the FA wants nothing to do with franchise football, has cut them out of any broadcast negotiations and is content to sit back, collect a measly sum from the APL every year and focus on real football...

This about sums it up for me. I know some of us are impatient, but if it takes a few years to let the mortar settle around the foundation bricks, so be it - as long as it gets done. As JJ said, Japan started somewhere (and got somewhere) but took a few years...

Seems like a Micky mouse competition, hope it evolves though.

Avondale vs WA team - will attendance be over under 300?

It makes no sense and is not accurate whatsoever.

Since the FA/JJ, APL runs it own and the FA run the rest of FOOTBALL in the country as known.
They are NOT the same as pre FFA under Lowy thats for bloody sure as Shark thinks.
IF it was we wouldn't be going down the road as JJ has been persisting with and Thank Christ for him even though its taking time time time.
He knows we need to get the place in order and moving forward.

This is the only comp that actually can claim it connects with the community, from a juniors level all the way through to club histories... we have been arguing this since the dawn of time!! Glad someone finally realised it but it adds to all those years of frustration now that they are claiming it as original thought FFS! Lol
 
As with everything in Australia, the public seems to be overkill negative and already putting it down. Yes, crowds may not be great unless it’s the marquee fixtures but unless you are top 5 league, good luck getting insane crowds each week. As long as it is sustainable for the organisation and clubs ffs.
