World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Line-up I'm expecting tonight (certainly wouldn't be mine): Ryan, Geria, Burgess, Rowles, Miller, Behich, Irvine, O'Neill, Boyle, Goodwin, Yengi.

The trouble with that lineup is that we can only play one way. Very predictable, and unfortunately likely as you've said.

actually the a league has a very progressive style (style is not the same as quality)
The AL style is a poorer version of the Serie A teams I've seen play ( Atalanta, Bologna, Inter Milan, Roma, Lazio, Empoli) and Celtic in Scotland.

All these teams support the ball carrier well, with players running intelligently to support him, and build up slowly and patiently, interspersed with bursts of teams moving the ball quickly.

The difference is in the AL the young Aussie players ( who have replaced a lot of the older Aussies aged 26-32) make a lot more mistakes at the early stages of their careers, but have been coached to play possession football from an early age.

You seem to have based your opinion of Triantis off 15 mins for Hibs v Celtic and a game he played for Australia as a youth international. It's a bit rich to criticise a highlights package in that context.

Anyway, I think the main point of your post is to give the Scottish league another whack. I think it's flaws as a league are well known.
I've raised this in more detail in the thread Suitable Leagues For Aussies To Play overseas.

I've seen Triantis play for Hibs against Celtic and Rangers, and for the Aus U 23s as a CB.

I think there are plenty of others his age and younger with a better skill set for midfield.

Players who play in Scotland, have rarely improved much apart from ball winning and heading, unless like Mooy and Rogic, they play for Celtic or Rangers.

I don't recall the last time we had a player like that ;)

He is outstanding at shielding the ball, taking players on, carrying the ball, outstanding passing range, gets passes away quickly under pressure, elite passing range, above average aerial duels and set piece threat and has a bit of creativity. He is also elite in his work rate and defensive qualities by the standard of the league

Like many of you on here we been watching aussie youth come through for a long time. We seen them all the Patafta/Oar/Babalj I could keep going. All were highly rated at youth. But they never really dominated their leagues.

That's what excites me about Nector he is the engine of that team and makes things happen. Never seen another aussie dominate like he has. I reckon he probably trains the house down too. Has he even been substituted at all this season? I cant see that he has... that's the biggest outlier to how important he is to the team. He's on bloody loan too...

they are talking alot of chicken before the egg mind you.
They'll get to the play offs by the look of it but nothing gauranteed as we know.
I expect why they like to have him for their defense is the weak link.
Triantis keep away from Irvine :)

Anyway its finally ROO GAME day !
Interestingly there was a hibs article yesterday where they said every hibs fan should hope Sunderland get promoted as its their only chance hibs get to keep him for another year as they think he is a year away from Premier league quality

They also hope he doesn't play for Australia or other clubs will chase him

Never discount a player off a one off performance, you can damage your credibility. One of the golden rules I was taught in scouting.
Are u a scout?

I get the impression from following scouts on twitter that they need a sample size of about 5 games and they will watch them several times over

Mind u, caleb Watkins will give scouting match reports after a single game sometimes. They often differ a little when he writes a proper report on a player

In terms of style, the main difference is in the a league there are very few shot assists coming from zone 14 compared to the level up

The level up again, pressing starts to become less intense and more practical as players are so press resistant there is no benefit charging players

Pasquali also pointed out that the a league is pretty open compared to most euro leagues which is a fair point

In terms of quality unfortunately I do see a gap despite improvement in the a league. It takes watching hundreds of games with different teams to assess a leagues quality imo.
10 years ago our outlier players would go strait into the xi in Switzerland
A couple of years ago our above average players would get immediate game time in Norway, Scotland etc and outliers go to jupiler and eredivisie

Now I think we are a small step up again where Denmark Switzerland and Austria are available for our above average players and hopefully our outliers can get into some of the better teams in jupiler, eredivise, championship etc

Mooy in the Championship and Huddersfield's first EPL season was unbelievable.

Many on the Hudds forum said he was the best player ever to wear their shirt.
