World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Two things I really liked from the game (and are linked) were Geria and Burgess's forward passing into midfield. I also liked how quick and aggressively we countered when we went. The former helped the latter.

Take Velupillay's goal, it was started by an aggressive forward pass by Geria, strong work from Taggart and great forward pass, and a lovely run and finish by Velupillay. I want to see more goals like that.

I think that's a model that can be really effective for us. Defensively robust but also aggressive when we decide to attack, creating higher percentage (easier to convert) scoring opportunities. That + set pieces has some potential for us. I think it'd work better in a 4-3-3 where we have a bit more in midfield, but that's just me.
it work well against a team that runs at us though... we gave away the ball AGAIN in silly areas of the pitch.. if not for some death defying saves my Matty and a missed penalty. they outcome would have been very different against a fairly mediocre outfit... lets see how he sets up against the Chinese...

That sliding doors moment where they missed the pen and Maty made the save. Yep - could have been a very different night.

I don't like the set-up with two heavily pressed CM's with little support. It'd be better with press resistent CM's, which would require player changes. Perhaps more realistically for us with a 4-3-3 and another technician so there's support.

I know it won't happen but it's what I'd like to see.

Maybe .... I think we will see a very different squad/lineup next week...

I'm yet to be convinced that Triantis is better. O'Neill is playing in a far better league too.

Pretty poor 1v1 ability, cant get himself out of bad situations like top 6s can, in tight areas he coughs it up alot but that's not his job in this system he does partner well with Irvine though they seem to be able to clean up for one another.

Triantis much better in this aspect in my opinion.

Would like to see us go 3-4-1-2 against China we will need a 10 for the low block. Boyle/Yengi up top.

I don't think this will be sustainable for Indonesia. They changed coach and went for a massive stylistic switch. Half the dressing room, the half who understand how to implement the style of play, speaking Dutch. Can this be done if half the squad can't communicate effectively? I worry it will be bad for their development long term.

First time trying to implement a new, more advanced system of play. Probably unsurprisingly they got cut open a number of times. There is a reason most ofAsia play us on the counter in Aus.

They probably did us a favour playing the style we are most adept at killing. We struggle with high quality possession teams, Japan, top euros, because we can't get any ball. They didn't have the quality to do that. We also struggle to break down the low block. They had good spells in possession, but not quite good enough to break us down regularly. They pressed us high, again weren't quite good enough to stop us playing, and came out enough for us to get in behind.

I always prefer teams trying to play. So credit to them. But even with our best ball playing defenders out, it's a big ask to press us that high, away from home.

I like the idea. But who plays 10? Popovic didn't pick any.

You think Indonesia made us sit back? There press was quite good and they kept the ball quite well.

Im not sure if it was deliberate but the space it gave for our attackers which was beneficial for us.
Definitely deliberate. I'll do some screen shot analysis to explain my reasoning. Irvine probably confused because he was probably told to play certain tactics meant we inevitably conceded posession

quite a few lies here champ

I've never referred to the Socceroos as the 'Poofteroos'. My views are from a realist perspective.

I'm not here to market Australian football. That's the job of the corporates and administrators, and unfortunately that seems to be their only priority. All I've seen over the past 20 years is Australian football go backwards whilst administrators find new colours of lipstick to apply to the pig.
Why limit it to last 20 years, I've been watching for 50 years & Australian Football sport's admin has been useless.
Please tell me when it was good or when we had outside of Kewell or Dukes world class players.

lol? he has consistently been in team of the week, never been substituted. Hibs are the only team to beat Celtic this year besides Rangers... what are you on about?
Hibs were very lucky to beat Celtic. Celtic were coming off a CL hangover, had a very slow start and had a goal disallowed which should've stood and the referees came out and admitted this weeks later. Second half was all Celtic and Hibs barely had any possession. Triantis was anonymous as he was in the cup game a week later.

Lol Kiwis 4-0 up after 30 mins in their hardest game to qualify for the World Cup against Fiji. They host New Caledonia Monday, winner is in and loser is into inter contintental playoff. I assume they will win 10-0 or something, surely Oceania has to merge with Asia.
