World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

I saw another scenario. Australia beat Japan 1:0 and Saudi win 5:0 closing the GD gap for the final game.

I reckon we'll qualify in the night. Saudi won't get the desired result and then like in 2014 other results didn't matter. Here's hoping.
 
Just rewatched the first half

a lot more comfortable than I remember and teague's debut was very good. No mistakes off the ball yet either. If I were to nitpick, Vellupilay made a couple of defensive errors and also made a few errors in transition, but so did all of the front three. I'm surprised there wasn't more rotation like poppa usually does? In the end Vellupilay scored so hard to complain

That one switch on the counter where Nishan stumbled sucked. It was building to go perfectly diagonal to Miller. Miller wasn't supported much either. Boyle would run right up nearly offside and the mids were distant. This was after quick play so it's understandable.

I really like the play that led to Velupillay flicking it across goal. Well, he should have shot first time but it was good play to get there. Min 2 if only the ball had been nudged to Irvine maybe he has a free shot.

Were the last game though aren’t we? I mean.. I guess you’re saying that Saudi won’t get the desired result against Bahrain (overnight) after we play Japan though?

That's right. Hopefully we draw with Japan and while nervous we'll Saudi not win.
 
Harking back to the Indonesia game I was impressed with their No 10 Ole Romney.He scored their goal and played like a true No 10 drifting across the field and between the lines.I know Popa doesn't play a true No 10 but if he did who could play that role for the Socceroos?Perhaps Caceres who has the skills and football nous and possibly Nisbet,Mcgree or Hrustic though these players are not in Popa's vision at the moment..Up the the track Segecic,Pearman and Milanovic could play that role.

the only true 10 i know is volpato sadly. Maybe robertson too?
Younger players might be good there like youlley

I agree. Although 40 might have been good - 8 groups of 5 so each team is guaranteed 4 matches. Every confed gets an extra slot plus extra playoff slots. It would have meant more dead rubbers though so 32 probably the perfect number.
