What makes me despair is that the "vessel" that we were told was going to bring the world and communication closer together is devolved into a capitalist tool, pushing us towards "curated" (God I farkin HATE that word and how its used today) content.. All heil the almighty algorithm... The internet was supposed to be a tool to facilitate an exchange of ideas not 3-4 companies dictating "if you liked this then perhaps you may want to try this?" - I have NOTHING to base this on but sheer observation but I reckon my children are subjected to 1000 times more advertorial messaging in 1 hour on the internet than I was in a whole week at the same age with nothing but TV, Radio and advertising billboards....

Once upon a time your choice in music, fashion, ideology ... EVERYTHING, was a product of your human interaction with your friends and family or others of influence in your immediate surroundings... It used to "take a village" to raise a child, now its alone time with your smart phone... Nowdays we are just pushed, like drunken buffoons, into one direction or another, led by fear, greed and malice from one outrage or trend to another... NOBODY talks to their neighbour anymore, kids these days dont hang around physically anymore, there is no sense of community endeavor, of the brotherhood of man and kindness and compassion towards those less fortunate... When most of us where groing up "doing the right thing" was an expectation and having a soild reputation amongst your peers was a sign of success.. Now its how many likes you get on a tik tok post of you licking someone else's arsehole.... How are these consumers going to be drawn to attend the Aleague or ANY live sport in the coming years?

Sorry about the rant, Im well aware that Im now "the angry old man yelling at clouds" just like the previous generation was to us.... its just soo deflating... I had hoped for better for our kids., the teenage angst years of exploring the world and figuring out who the hell you are and what you stand for have been replaced by AI telling them what they should aspire to own and how best to prostitute themselves to get it....

A major sponser and especially a viewing provider will always influence the product they invest in - a couple of wrongs isn’t entirely on them but the governance as well.
From my perspective the product AL lacks “wow” factors but for derbies that are marketed well obviously for the ROI desperately needed rest of the season struggles.
The fish are the registered boys girls families and Snr players and mates - again most/a % of these attend derbies.
Rest of the comp goes through the motions till people get notice its finals time.
That’s the product and the crowd annual barometer.

A fine rant Mono.

My wife and I made some comments to a handful of teenage schoolgirls on a train once (yes, perilous though that was) when they were bullying and terrorising a male adult passenger - including sitting all round him, taking his magazine, then ripping pages out screwing them up and throwing them at him. The conductor came and they all said "sorry" and that was the end of the official repercussions. Despite their obvious and sincere regret, they still made sure to throw the last of the screwed up pages in his face as they got off later.

When we delicately called them losers, one of them said "I've got more friends than you. I've got thousands of friends."

And she believed it to be true.

Sad world.

On another note, do you have a link to that tik tok post?

hahha bastard, you made me laugh a little too loudly at that last crack :P No links to the actual post however they keep on coming up far to frequently in my youtube adventures so must be the "algorithm" trying to tell me I have a problem ......

BTW what the hell kind of trains do you ride on that they have conductors????

Big difference then was we knew what an advertisement looked or sounded like. It was very clear and was heavily regulated. It's not so clear now, it's all blurred together. Non-disclosed sponsored content left right and center. Micro-transactions draining bank accounts. Training kids to gamble through the guise of loot boxes. It's pretty fucked up for young people now. We forget that they don't know what it was like before the internet, before mobile phones, before social media, before media streaming. All they know is this world. This is their only frame of reference.

Fortunately my niece is quite switched on and regularly asks us about our experiences when we were her age. Like how we would discover music back then. Like you said, it was mostly radio, friends and family. One thing that fascinated me was that she is 19 and had never heard of nor watched Rage. Fortunately you can stream it on iView now, so we put on the Friday night stream and immediately she found a few artists she had never heard of and wanted to check out. We explained that it was super common for us as young people to just hang out at a mates house having drinks, talking shit with Rage on in the background. It's obviously still curated content but it's not individually targeted content so you are always going to get exposed to a mixed bag of stuff. I think that's the biggest flaw in this new world. Nobody is stumbling onto anything by accident. Nobody is hearing a song that isn't "because I listened to this other song". Nobody is borrowing/burning a CD from a mates collection because nobody has a collection anymore. Nobody is reading a random article they found flipping through a newspaper or magazine. Nobody is tagging along to a football game because nobody is hanging out together anymore.

On the positive, today's young people are definitely better at some things. They have a much better understanding of mental health, which is actually huge. They might not have the solutions, but they are way more aware of those issues. Whereas when we would be feeling shitty, we'd drink our problems away at some trashy nightclub. Then repeat the following week.
Also, dudes don't have to call the home phone when they were trying to hook up with a girl anymore. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. My palms are sweating right now just remembering those times I'd gather the courage to call some chick, only for her old man to answer the phone and then having to make some sort of small talk with him. I don't know what was worse, when her dad would answer or when a younger sister would answer. Either way it sucked.

You're a very useful engine Mono.

The guy who gets off at each station, looks after people getting on and off, and whistles the driver to go is still a conductor as far as I am concerned :)

Probably Onboard Customer Support Officers now...

Hahaha spot on.... pro and cons of technology and yes, remember those days practising the "speech" in case the old man or lady answered the landline ... and having keep in ear peeled for the faint "click" as ratbag little brother picked up the extension to listen in on the phone call... :)

Great to hear your neice showing an interest in our ancient civilisation btw?? I try and pass on the same stuff to my kids but they struggle to relate (are much younger).. Most recent example was while cleaning out some shit in the garage over Christmas and found a whole box full of mix-tapes ... they where facsinated about the whole process .. we taped some songs off the radio, tried to avoid the radio announcers intro and outro etc etc.. they loved it ... then went back to their phones and just goggled the same songs to show me how much easier it was :(

In Brisbane they did a bloody survey and found that most users of QRail preferred to be called customers rather than passengers FFS.

The whole world is f*cked! Lucky that excludes anyone who reads or posts on this forum.

And now we should probably get back to aleague attendances before I get banned for derailing this thread (yes, intended).
