Indonesia beat South Korea 1:0 at the death with a penalty. The reverse angle seems to shot the ball clearly hits the torso while the other 2 I'm still not sure. No VAR but the defender panicking putting his arm behind his back then forward may have provoked the ref.
Good reminder that we could be ina worse positio

Japan 2:0 up early. Very sharp. UAE essentially traffic cones.

To be fair to the Joeys, Macnicol’s penalty was over the line, and they hit the crossbar twice. Could easily have been 4-1

A bit bizarre that the Vietnamese keeper was in yellow. Wouldn't expect to see this in local leagues, let alone an AFC tournament.

sometimes luck is against you. Still I wasn't thrilled with some of the touches given the improvement I've seen technically lately

interestingly the side looked well built, normally our u17s are scrawny

I know it’s under 17 level, but I don’t understand the time wasting and playing for fouls in this game, for me it goes against the purpose of this level which should be about development and given the expanded World Cup for this level there is no reason why countries should treat it as such.

So I was disappointed to see the stop and start nature of this game.

Also with the goals, our was a well taken strike by Macnicol but the Aussie keeper had a howler by allowing the near post strike where should have done much better it looked like a winnable game.

Yeah it's weird but I guess from our perspective it is good to get used to awful tactics early

I don't condone time wasting and playing for fouls, but surely no matter what the age this is a cup competition where you are representing your country. It can't be difficult to understand why teenage kids would follow the same human behaviour that they have spent their lives watching and now emulating.

It's the highest level of international football at that age group on the continent, again not saying I like it but trying to get a result by any means necessary seems normal in these kinds of sporting environments...doesn't it??

I feel we don't quite have the same passion at this level as our opponents

There is a difference between passion and doing something that’s unsportsmanlike.

I don’t think some countries hold morals high up there list and then they question why they don’t improve at senior level.

But that’s my opinion and I know not everyone thinks then same in this world but it’s not a good look they doing this already at u17 level which minimal compared to what happens at senior level.

It can certainly look like that...

Aussie kids have so many choices on how to spend their leisure time plus there's a certain coolness in not appearing to try too hard. In contrast, for many of the countries in Asia, football is the way to a better life and players are desperate to succeed. They tend to be a bit more nationalistic than us laid-back Aussies also.

So yes, while it wouldn't apply equally to every individual, I suspect you're right about passion.

So we'll just have to win with our superior fitness and technique.

our wingers at all age level are too one dimensional to face a deep block. They need to be effective cutting both inside and outside but pretty much every winger I know is only effective at one or the other. Does anyone know of an exception?

We are getting better in z14 though which is half the battle. Being good in z14 means creating space outwide for better wing play

having vietname v japan on in the background during a couple of meetings....will be interesting to compare the standard

we will need a result against japan i suspect
