AAGPS football (private schools football)

Welcome.

That's great - any further info?

Is it better than the Bill Turner Cup?

7 schools battle it out each year in one of the oldest competitions in Australia between elite private schools. (Scots, Newington, Kings, Shore, Sydney High, Sydney Grammar, St Josephs).
Didn't the "elites" shit on soccer and only promote rugby and Aussie rules?
*Andy Harper has entered the chat

Good to know anyway. Is this knockout style?

Inception, early days especially. His thesis is worth reading.

“We’ve always said the problem with the game was the last people who were running it and it’s not. The game was ostracised by the colonial power brokers who said this game was not part of the ordained British brotherhood around the world.

“Then when it becomes even more entrenched in the working class, it drives the wedge deeper and further, and in Australia it had no institutional network. Rugby League had the catholic schools, rugby had the private schools and soccer was only there in the protestant churches, which up until recently didn’t have a schools network. This is where the game came unstuck. It’s not a function of someone’s skin colour or language, the wogs [sic] didn’t make it, nor did they ruin it.

“When the NSL was running around with bad politics and no money, it wasn’t their fault. Soccer didn’t fail because it was ethnic, it failed because it was run badly. It’s not a hard case to prosecute.’’

Ah huh Thanks HG.
Huge point this :
“When the NSL was running around with bad politics and no money, it wasn’t their fault. Soccer didn’t fail because it was ethnic, it failed because it was run badly. It’s not a hard case to prosecute.’’

So the pioneers Anglo's had trouble placing it themselves way way back - bonkers it is for obviously the Private Schools pushed the rugby directive as well amongst others mis directions as in the Harper link.
Not surprised they were all about the "privilidged" and the rest were convicts right :)
Hence so much of the angst AND what us born here but born from migrants also went through amongst the whole mix up of the "ethnics" outlook come the 60/70's on......

Least its (football) has finally busted through the door of the bastion ignorant racist Private schools.
I brought up my kids in areas close and local to some mentioned by the thread starter.
Funny by the time my boys got into their early secondary education sochka to those private snobs was making huge inroads in their system.
Sons mates were their top players and more parents pushed for more squads for rugby is getting that dirty aggro sport mummys don't want their kids playing hahaha
Now its entrenched, imagine how those snobby bastion families must feel I glee with pay back.

My boys went to good catholic schools and also Football is huge.
Through all their years many of the good players were through SAP/NPL and some went/been with SFC etc....
Some guns teams I used to enjoy going to all those games having both boys playing 1sts like badge of honour the rugby guys get in their 1sts.
The fields are table tops typically being good schools - then you'd rush off get them to their normal Club comp games, busy busy weekends they were.

The Catho's are in :
ISA, Combined Independent Schools (CIS), State and National levels.
Competition in the ISA involves schools including St Patrick’s Strathfield, SCECGS Redlands, Oakhill College, St Andrews Cathedral, Kinross Wolaroi, St Stanislaus, St Augustines Brookvale, St Spiridons and Chevalier College. Pre-season and social games also include competition against schools such as St Josephs College, St Ignatius College, Waverley College, St Aloysius, Barker, Knox, Kings, Grammar, Newington and many of the other independent schools in Sydney, depending upon the sport.

The comp is like a CL, you play in Grp (area) stages, then keep progressing to finals played at FNSW Valentines Park.
It is so well supported typicall being school comps, great atmosphere each school having a "active" against "active".
Enjoyable times and games were full on badge of honour stuff - due that many play against each other either in Clubland or NPL or above.

Massimo Luongo, I assume the highest alumni for the schools. Perhaps Volpato?

Been 10/15yrs football making huge inroads fellas here in Syd and it will keep growing.
Mention of Volpato is near the area we resided, daughter knows the fam.
Infact Joeys one of the lonnng time rahrah bastions even he ended up with Culina as their TD football was growing so much.
Yeah it's encouraging. Sacred Heart College in SA, a top AFL player producer, has hired Mauk and Pierias as coaches!

good to see and getting ex players is another draw card and they know the game obviously.
Look rahrah will always hold its foundation spot in these schools but Football will grow and grow - big % of mummys today don't want to see their precious ones get beaten up compared to Football but for the dieing stalwarts.
