Big series win.

However, we have an ageing attack. It is a real worry we don't have a few experienced Test pace bowlers aged in their 20s. Spin looks okay, but there are no experienced Aussie pace bowlers aged in their 20s.

Would you believe he scored a 100 and took five wickets in a grade game at 16 then at 17 scored a grade double hundred. Then he had a series of stress injuries and missed a year. I wondered at the time where he had gone.
Wow!

Tas has another very promising 18 YO all rounder (pace) called O'Connor. He displaced Owen in the Shield team.

I know, didn't I tell you about him Jon or was it the other way round. I definitely recall giving you some gen on their Seconds performances. I'd be pleased if both O'Connor and Smith were in any upcoming Aussie U19s tours/series.

I think O'Connor has been in the Aus u19s?

Yep last yr. Did well too. Louis Smith has had a few injuries which have curtailed his career to date.
Mitchell Owen and Nathan Ellis both chosen in the first T20 which is now live in Aussie

Mitchell Owen with a wicket in his first over. I said couple years back that this guy is made for the white ball format. Not too shabby in red ball either as I have seen him decimate Pommie sides in the Lancashire League.

A bit of a worry with two of our trumvirate close to retirement. Blame the selectors as there have been occasions when our top trio could have been rested and a couple of those 20s bowlers blooded. They prefer to bring in 30s instead of 20s. Even in this current Darwin A series the pacers are in their mid to late 20s, bar Louis Smith. This was the perfect chance to pick Mahli Beardman, Charlie Anderson or Callum Vidler, all about 20 and good prospects.

A big partnership by Weatherald (183) and Jason Sangha (121*) has the Aussies closing on the Lankans score. Cant see anything other than a draw on this Darwin batters track.

Australia has a ready made tourist for Asia, Aussie A skipper Jason Sangha, who today posted a double century in the unofficial Test in Darwin and looked far more composed against both pace and spin as I ever saw from him as a Blue. In fact he makes playing quality spin look almost easy. Only other player I can think of that does the same is Steven Smith. In the past most of our top 6 have floundered in Asia because we allow their spinners to dominate due to our lack of technique and inability to problem solve. Like Smith, Sangha does problem solve by turning the pressure back onto the bowler in both attack and defense. In fact, I doubt there is anyone presently playing in shield that comes close to his almost perfect defense, with firstly good footwork to get to the pitch, then head over the ball and with an angled bat to smother the turn.
Is the kid drowned by self expectation when thrown into first class cricket at a tender 18 yrs, about to finally realize his full potential at a mature 25.

Have to admit I’ve never seen Beardman, Anderson or Vidler play Shield.

Not sure which states they play for? Apart from Beardman playing for WA.

Good analysis, Baggers.

Gabe Bell finds Weatherald the most difficult batter to bowl to.

What do you think about Weatherald for higher honours, Baggers?

From my state. Has played a CAX1 game I think and a couple of 2nds games. Our useless selectors still have him on a Blues rookie contract. Anderson reminds me of a young J H. Vidler is a Qlander.

Probably because he is prepared to take a risk to score off him. Tim Ward and Henry Hunt are more deserving as I posted yesterday, but selectors like good scores in A games and Weatherald has followed up a terrific '25 Shield with 183 in this game. Ward has also made the most of his past A chances and he too had an excellent '25 Shield.

As a massive cricket nuffie over many decades, gotta call out the recent crop of exciting next genners, bat and ball. Unknowns a couple of years ago before they announced themselves in a big way as winners of the U19 WC and U19 Junior Ashes, these kids now sit on the threshold of a probable Test career. Names like Harry Dixon, Mahli Beardman, Charlie Anderson, Hugh Weibgen, Callum Vidler, Joel Davies, Raf MacMillan and Test debutant Sam Konstas of course, plus others unamed. Then there are the 17-19s current Pathways best of the crop, Aidan O'Connor, Louis Smith, Ollie Peak, Simon Budge, Riley Kingsell, Lincoln Hobbs, Addison Sheriff, Steven Hogan. Some have already played 2nd X1s. And there are plenty more. All I can say is Aussie cricket looks to be in good hands for the next generation plus and that pleases this old cricket tragic big time..
