The Australian Championship Thread

In the submission to Parliament sent before the current Federal sitting the FA has called on the Australian, NSW and Vic governments to each provide $1m seed money for the National Second Tier. If you got that from each state government with the possible exception of the territories there would be plenty of money for each state to be represented.

Um, last line is:

“I want to thank all the Foundation Clubs and Member Associations who are working very hard to establish this new competition and make sure that it is set up for continued long-term success.”
Oh well... feww that reassures us then.... All is on track... Bravo Heather, Bravo FA.

I don't exactly trust the FA but I'm just as skeptical of other claims (with good reason given that all levels of football in Australia have been warring with each other for as long as I can remember). Clubs, associations, state federations and national administrations have all been guilty.

The other thing is that it is 48 years since the NSL started with 14 teams from 4 states and 1 territory. Surely 48 years on we can do better than 8 clubs from 2 states.
Surely you mean 18 clubs from 6 states - Aleague included?

Good ideas but Cairns, Townsville no thanks. Been tried in Townsville anlready and these places are rugba leeg hotspots. Tassie would also struggle with the economy there and the population exodus from the state to the mainland. Brisbane are struggling to get 7K at Suncorp, as are Perth at HBF, how can another team work there? Another Adelaide team could work maybe? Do NPL teams have the cash? Which teams are the richest in the NSW/Vic NPLs?
Weren't Townsville getting crowds in excess of 8k until they ran out of $$$?

Not sure about Brisbane and Adelaide, but I am almost certain a new Perth team would probably be more succesful than glory if done right.

Souths, Preston? They would average no less than 5k instantly i assume? Was watching Avondale in the cup against Stirling last week, and there must have been no more than 300 people.

North Queensland Fury 2010/2011:
Highest 7,195 vs GCU
Lowest 1,003 vs BRI
Average 4,245
Season 63,681(15 games)

Are there any countries similar to Aus in terms of geographgy and funding, with a succesful multi tier pyramid?
Brazil? Russia? It doesn't matter... it NOT the funding.... its peanuts 1-2 million per year for travel. Maybe 400-500K more than what FA is spending on Australia cup travel as we speak) .. its the willingness to allow a rival competition that the APL and the State feds are preventing... nothing more, nothing less...

250 of those fans were locals or travelling Stirling fans... Avondale is the closest thing NPL VIC has to a franchise...

The clubs I've associated with the past couple years have said it's solely a funding issue. These are Perth clubs though so would cost more to attract better players.

Players salaries is the main issue, imo.

Are they full time, part time?

Sure, I can't speak for teh West but here in VIC we have state league clubs paying players $2,000 - $3,000 per match.... MAke it a viable national competition and sponsors will provide the necessary funds to pay players... A good example is Preston over here,,, from the moment they were announced as foundation club the sponsors formed a line 100 long to fork over the dollars to jump on board....

THATS the main gripe with things at the moment... 8 x clubs ahve set themselves up to have a crack and there are another 8 just waiting for the opportunity to do the same thing... are you telling me that is someone like Azzuri or Stirling (or anyone else) in Perth gets green- lit for this comp tomorrow there wont be 20-30 local sponsors keen to fund the players wages???? I dont believe it.

What about Melbourne Knights, how come they haven't been able to get there shit together?

Yep, I do think that is the case here. Athena, proud club and history, will be relegated for the first time in my life time. Was adament some Greek God would have come to the rescue.

Well according to the experts on reddit...
lol what the experts on Reddit dont realise (or don't want to realise) is that these clubs and this competition currently EXISTS.... all that is required is a minimal funding to make it national rather than separate state based... it just needs a national top div to raise interest and create a dynamic where clubs are able to work towards the pinnacle of representation of the sport in our country.... I honestly don't believe that the FA is worried about this folding ... even if it fails after 1-2 seasons what is lost? The clubs will go back to to exactly the level they are now, no harm, no foul.

The only people with something to lose are franchsies unwilling to "share" their fan/consumers.

I can't speak for Knights ... they are having a year from hell at the moment.... But one thing I do know, knowing how fiercely loyal their fans are to their club, if the FA announces that come 2026 any club that wins their respective state NPL will have a chance to be promoted into the Australian Championship ... they will well and truly get their shit together .... and quick smart too.

At the moment whether they play NPL or VPL1 the incentives are the same ..... nothing :(

North Queensland crowds were dire. Highest was only 8897 in their whole existence. First season they averaged 6723 and the second it plummeted to 4245, a dip of 37%.

I actually wouldn't call that dire haha. As @biggiemic said, 4k should be sustainable. Macarthur and Western United have struggled to reach that, and Macarthur have the benefit of a bunch of derbies to draw on.

Fury were kinda rubbish on the pitch too, imagine if they were half decent.

Also didnt help that they were playing through the tropical wet season in a venue which had little to no cover from the elements and it poured pretty much every game that played
