Which Book Are You Reading thread

One thing I love about Edinburgh, apart from the fantastic football culture aspect is that it has a rich literary history, and vibrant contemporary book scene too.

The city is or was home to countless literary sites and writers - Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Robert Burns are the best known....

And in modern times Ian Rankin, Iain Banks, JK Rowling and of course ol' mate Welshie himself...

And there are bookshops everywhere, both new and second hand and you could barely walk a few blocks without stumbling into one. It's like book heaven!

And there's a lovely writers museum just along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's Old Town which celebrates the city's literary history and the lives of it's many writers.

The Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle are fantastic historical areas to visit!
 
I'm just about to warily try to recruit en masse from another bookreading group on another forum.

It is huge. One Mod, who is anally retentive, after long discussions with their huge Mod panel, thinks it is against the rules for me to advertise G and G Bookreading thread on that forum.

A more junior Mod has given me the green light to openly advertise our cricket thread, but I must admit, there are a few members I don't want to recruit!

So I'm going to PM the bookreaders over time. 20 posters who give lengthy, insightful reviews.

They are a pretty earnest lot, who would amount to being similar to the 20 - 30 most sensible posters who post on G and G.

Anyway if they come to G and G, please be gentle with newbies. Some of them might even be interested in football.

I had no idea how this thread would go when I started it? It has exceeded my expectations! The erudite, cerebral and insightful reviews from Mono, RMIB, Football Us Life, and our own forum esteemed author, Mr C, have enhanced the reputation of this forum involving books!

It puts G and G Bookreading thread in a good light.

No need to talk to my better half, she figured out long ago re ironing, hang everything on coat hangers when coiming out of the drier - plus buying non iron clothing makes for much free time.
Hand steamer works wonders as well - you need to arrive to the 21st century ol man.
She also still works 3day weeks she's a Champion !

I reckon she needs to retrain you in cooking, and some ironing, son!

My wife bought this excellent steam iron, which irons twice as fast! Ironing mixes well with G and G Podcasts too.

Hand steamer? We might have one? Have not grasped it yet. Still using older technology!
 
SNAPSHOT: GARY DISHER

Genre: Crime

Setting : Peninsula area in Victoria

Number of Pages: 340

I chose this book because I've liked all of Gary Disher books in the Peninsula series that I've read.

Yet another quality book written by GD in this setting. The protagonists are Detective Inspector Hal Challis and Detective Sergeant Ella Destry.

Both are likeable characters, work well with each other ( a bit too well) and have astute investigative insights. DC Sutton is a bit of a plodder, Constable Pam Murphy has talent and Constable John Tankard is a heavy handed beat cop.

Tank is amorously attracted to Murphy. Challis and Destry are physically attracted to each other too.

Superintendent Quarrie has close relatives who are key suspects and constantly hampers the investigation. He has no investigative skills. His family are caught up in things that are embarrassing. I'm aware of Spoilers, so won't add to this. It gave me a good chuckle!

There are terrific twists and turns and the culprit for the crimes is totally unexpected and from left field.

As usual GD, spoils all his books IMO, by an inadequate, brief, far too short conclusion. Snapshot is no different.

Son ? thanks I'm feeling young And need training ? I have far too many other recipes and tasks on my plate unlike you living retired life and told when to "jump" how high LOL..........
Get on the page with new tech ol mate, you'll be amazed and thank me saving you time from your duties.

No need to talk to the better half plus she wouldn't listen :) , she figured out long ago re ironing, hang everything on coat hangers when out of the drier - plus buying non iron clothing makes for much free time, live it.
Hand steamer works wonders as well - you need to hit the 21st century ol man.
You had plenty time with all the school public hols come on.

Ol’ man!

I’m in the process of recruitment for this thread. Prospective posters will be motivated to join this thread with the bulk of posts being reviews.

Given all the time you watch your wife ironing, cooking and performing domestic duties, instead, reading some fiction and posting subsequent reviews on this thread would be good, LFC.

That is, if you aren’t going to help the poor, long suffering lady!

Just post reviews of 3 Little Pigs and Goldilocks, LFC.

It is a start!
