The Western United Thread

Interesting
Normally when the central body takes over there is a points deduction usually leading to relegation. I guess this is so the central body isnt blowing money on a team year on year? (Also avoids conflict of interest)
You've gotta have a team! Now APL does!

In seriousness though - last time this happened this way was Gold Coast and NQ wasn't it, and they were both removed, yeah? But there's definitely been teams with the APL/FA being given back the licence by the owners and then they'd hold onto it for a season or so until a new buyer was found. So, yes that's normally how things are done overseas, but not here..

Rumour is the group that were going to buy the licence Kam Melbourne... withdrew as buying it directly from APL will be a fraction of the price they would pay WU...
This in fact is exactly how rumours start - Waz floated as pure speculation on the Roar, and I posted it here attributed to Waz as his speculation of a possible scenario. In that post I noted that we could now look forward to conspiracy theories unleashed.

Which is not to say it can't happen.

Yes they had months of tradition!
As ridiculous as your answer (and my question btw) is, that is the one thing that never ceases to amaze me.... Detractors of the old NSL clubs make jabs at poor NSL club attendances both in the old days and even smaller ones after 20 years of banishment from visibility however its NEVER seen as a hurdle to a new entity coming in with absolutely 0 attendances the previous year??? Isn't it easier to grow a fanbase of 500 people than it is to make one from scratch?

In one of the articles above it mentions Tarneit FC who maybe, at best, would get 100 people (absolutely no disrespect intended).. that is 100 MORE people than WU got in 2018.... If this was about football, they could have made it about football....... all along.

This was Fox sports, no one else.

they can't afford doing so - you know the Suits, like they did with Jets etc, they/APL clubs combined will absorb the costs so as their product has some kind of package in the hope the next broadcast deal helps loosening the quick sand.
The difference with the Jets & the Glory (and was there one or two other teams which handed their licence back at some point? Roar maybe?) is that they represented a distinct geographical area with a population that followed them, and it would've hurt the league overall to lose a team in that area.

In WUN's case, there's already 2 A-League teams in the same area, so there's less incentive to save them & find a new owner.

And to bring back my biggest bugbear about the team.... "Western United" is a fucking stupid name for a team based in the south eastern corner of Australia. Who was the suit that looked at this map;

and said "'Western United' is a sensible name for this team"?
(West Melbourne or Tarneit or Geelong, or whatever would've been fine)

But on a positive note... I do like their colours. Green + Black = Nice combo.

*Tarneit United…let’s put some respect on the mighty Leopards🐆

Disagree - ugly AF colour-scheme unless you’re Sassuolo or some other side that’s been around since before 2018.

IIRC GC folded during the season so FA took over at the time to complete the season. NFQ did not fold during the season but completed their season when the license was taken from them. In this case the season has not started so there is no obligation on APL to run the club although they have done so in the past with NJ and CCM I believe.

Not from Melbourne I see.

This side of the Yarra we were always the Western Suburbs and ended in St Albans. Then it continued to expand and the former farming township of Werribee became the outermost suburb, then a whole lot more new suburbs were created. And last year Channel 9 referred to Lara as part of the Western suburbs. Hence Western United.

Indeed. The loss of WU doesn't even affect TV content as there are still six games a week.
