Over the last few days have watched the Socceroos three games on the FIFA website.First one against East Germany was a pretty good effort-had to do lots of defending but the the team did not look overawed and our opponents would have been concerned with a nil all half time score. The second game was against West Germany( Beckenbauer,Vogts,Overath ,etc) and even though we went down 3 nil the boys defended well and some of the midfield passages of play by the Socceroos were quite classy.Rooney and Bulejvic particularlyplayed well.
The final game against Chile ended up nil all so first WC final point gained. The second half was played in a downpour which made passing difficult. The team did look tired and this was not unexpected as they were semi professionals.
Interestingly in all three games referee's decisions were hardly disputed and there was no diving. However some of the tackles( including by our blokes ) was pretty brutal .Long range shooting was pretty poor by all teams except for one cracker by a West German midfielder Cullman which gave our goalie no chance.
If you ever get a chance worth looking at on the FIFA site in the Archives section. In some ways the football was"purer" as big money was not around and most players were still playing in their home countries .
