Over the last few days have watched the Socceroos three games on the FIFA website.First one against East Germany was a pretty good effort-had to do lots of defending but the the team did not look overawed and our opponents would have been concerned with a nil all half time score. The second game was against West Germany( Beckenbauer,Vogts,Overath ,etc) and even though we went down 3 nil the boys defended well and some of the midfield passages of play by the Socceroos were quite classy.Rooney and Bulejvic particularlyplayed well.

The final game against Chile ended up nil all so first WC final point gained. The second half was played in a downpour which made passing difficult. The team did look tired and this was not unexpected as they were semi professionals.

Interestingly in all three games referee's decisions were hardly disputed and there was no diving. However some of the tackles( including by our blokes ) was pretty brutal .Long range shooting was pretty poor by all teams except for one cracker by a West German midfielder Cullman which gave our goalie no chance.

If you ever get a chance worth looking at on the FIFA site in the Archives section. In some ways the football was"purer" as big money was not around and most players were still playing in their home countries .

Watching things like this progress over time is an interesting thing - I've been doing it with professional wrestling/WWE recently (dating back to the '50s in some instances)

Have been meaning to do this with the Socceroos world cup games (had done this with World Cup finals though from 1994 onwards).

I get what you mean booney ... For me, the 94 world cup was the last pure football spectacle before the rise of the "millionaire player" and even then it was creeping up...

yes Booney the pioneers from '74 got to give alot credit to them and Rasic was a Legend for us.
The quali games were epic what our Team went up against.
The SK win to make the WC was amazing feat.
Mackay's epic winner was like we experienced Aloisi's pen take getting us through later on.
I marvel seeing the all the NSL clubs the players came from.

Here's the history some of the young fellas wonder where "socceroos" came to be :
Despite the pair of failed attempts, the late ‘60s and early ‘70s marked the rise of the Socceroos we see today – both in name and spirit.

There remains contention surrounding the exact date the renowned term was coined, however most agree the man responsible was journalist Tony ‘Hotspur’ Horstead.

“When Tony first penned the word Socceroos and we all went, ‘you’ve got to be joking Tony!,” Baartz reminisces, “That’s pretty corny, it’ll never take off!

“Here we are today and it’s a household name.”
