I remember seeing Whitlam at the Socceroos vs Uruguay game at the SCG in 1974. The crowd sang Waltzing Matilda at one point!74 achievement is just crazy.
Yeah, probably has NOTHING to do with the football content I watch on youtube.... ah re wolfie.... you really DO try hard sometimes to appear "tuff".....it knows you're a Labor devotee so it pushes more of that content in your direction
biggest one of them all imo to qualify out of 16 only.74 achievement is just crazy.
I'm not downplaying the achievement at all, but in 1974 only 99 countries entered the World Cup, and 206 countries entered in 2022. So the ratio of qualifiers to entrants is roughly the same. In Asia and Oceania, 1 team qualified out of 18 entries in 1974, while in 2022 Asia had 4.5 qualifiers from 45 entrants, so on that basis nearly twice as hard in 1974. In 1974 Australia played 11 games to qualify, with 7 being at home and 3 away and one neutral, while in 2022 Australia played 20 games with 4 at home (admittedly another 5 "home" games were played away or in neutral territory and some away games were also in neutral territory due to Covid), including two playoff matches also played in neutral territory.biggest one of them all imo to qualify out of 16 only.
I think a big part of what makes it stand out to me is the fact we were knocked out by kuwait a few years after and a few years before we were getting flogged by india and north koreaI'm not downplaying the achievement at all, but in 1974 only 99 countries entered the World Cup, and 206 countries entered in 2022. I agree, it was pioneering and a huge accomplishment. I was just comparing then and now.Keeper let’s not forget they were semi pros as well.
It was all pioneering for an outpost and bugger all funding.
The many newer entrants today in Asia have pro leagues and way better systems than what we had back in the 70’s let alone 60’s.
You bring up some good points agreed - it never easy even today but I think Rasic and the team were trail blazers imo.
