Good luck to all teams this year.

Let's kick off the discussion. Without gambling would NRL be broke?

The Parramatta Eels made a profit of $24.6million last year.
$55.9million of their revenue came from poker machines.
You do the maths.

I have a soft spot for the St George Dragons ( fairweather fan tbh ) however I've comforted that they're mid to lower table shyte every season.

It's the same with most leagues or general clubs. Here is something to do next time you're at a club, somewhere in the club there is the a quarterly report/annual reports/base financials pinned up as they're legally obligated to do it. Look at the report and find a little category in Income or Revenue called "Contracts with Customers". The clubs are such weasels that they don't want to call it gaming anymore. Have a good at how much revenue comes in from gambling ( i.e pokies ). I was at a certain club in Sydney last month & it was about twenty million per quarter before expenses.

So yeah they would go broke. Shit the floor space of St.George Leagues Club ( Taj Mahal ) is 75% pokies. It's fucked.

"Contracts with Customers"
I haven't heard that one. AFL is the same. "Between July 2021 and June 2022, gamblers lost a total of $29.9 million at AFL-owned venues, with the lower figure across 12 months in part due to COVID-19 lockdowns" that's the LOWER figure!

The Kangaroos are the ONLY club not to have pokies. In 2023:
Carlton received $19.1m from 290 machines at four venues
Essendon received $14.7m from 190 machines at two venues
Richmond received $4.6m through 97 machines

Oh btw, go Storm hahaha!

Not sure about "broke" but challengers possibly......
Lets not forget the FOX $$$
Media and rugby league sources claim the total agreement, which expires in 2027, is worth a little over $1.7 billion when including rights in New Zealand.
here's the original recent deal link
Plus the other sponser revenues Harvey Norman etcetc.....

Club pokey funds are a bonus to run the premise's - so the premise's alone would be the side suffering though wouldn't you think the NRL would pass on more funding for survival like the APL does.

Ah God as a kid it was chopping and changing for me. Supported Souths first and then they got kicked out. Being a kid I felt I had to have a team so I picked Manly. I was thrilled they moved to the Coast but became disillusioned after the licence reverted to Manly and the entire Gosford set up was in question. I switched to Parramatta and lost most NRL interest by 2006. As an adult it's Souths. My first team and jersey same colours as Hannover. The rabbit logo is special.

yer those were heavy times in the game back then JS, poor Piggins he was a legend of the game I felt for him way back then.
Super league lost me compared to how much I used to watch pre SL.
Should have stuck with the Sea Eagles :)
Re Gosford - amazed me how many moves it was tried to get a club established there, I thought the Bears was finally going to get the green light more than the Eagles venture.
With all the $ and influence ol Singo had/has I thought for sure something was going to prevail but not.
Good how it all fell on CCM's lap in the end, how ironic for the game.

As for this thread I am in ways as Mono mentioned this is a real football site but I get everyone has other code outlets.
Shame there is a separate Doggie thread for I do think if this is to be, 1 thread of the game should be the main filtering point for all to see that have interest.
I will watch a few games this season for the heck for normally all I do regularly watch is SOO and come finals time but listen to the press/goss on .am when driving

On NRL expanding to WA, some mind boggling gifts from the WA government:

  • The WA government had initially offered a $120m grassroots funding request over 10 years
  • The funding would include investing $350m to increase Perth’s rectangular HBF stadium from 22,500 to 27,000 and upgrade the facilities to ensure the new team can earn up to 70 per cent of its game-day revenue from corporate partnerships.
  • Other funding would see $25 (million) injected into a temporary high-performance facility at Ken Allen Field in Fremantle while a long-term centre of excellence will be built as a community asset in Malaga.
  • The cost of opening HBF stadium is estimated to be $150,000 each game, but the government has offered a period of rent-free use for the NRL.
  • Another significant development is the in-principle agreement to match, dollar-for-dollar, any funding from NRL Western Australia.

yep HG, all I can say its good politics made by the NRL.
Velandy's is a operator.
Why I quoted in another thread why can't JJ play the game like these guys
He hosts bloody Albo and others sucking up to Matilda/Roo games, the WWC, like really get some balls.
IMO whilst the game has 2 paths thats the hard barrow to push BUT he could push for alot of Jnr Development support/a COE Arnold has gone on about for our NT's.

Anyway sorry off topic.

V'Landys is an "operator"??? mate he sold the games to Los Vegas.... Im sure the APL would love to do the same...... ?

Operater is a common misspelling of the the word 'operator. :)

Yep that he has good $ for coffers I suppose, he's like your E/McGuire no ? now bringing in more merican crap to the G.
APL can't figure out how to sell mate :)

My luck is whenever I picked a team, they got worse. Came in at the peak. Adolescent stuff and now I will just endure the pain. Hannover 96, Carlisle, NY Jets. Loserville!

For me the Mariners are such a success story and I'm so glad how it all panned out. NRL reps would come to our junior training in the early 2000s telling us we'll have a guaranteed own team by 07 and being the right age when it hits, could very much make up part of the reserves and first team. Bunch of liars showing lip service to a genuine bid.

My dad is somewhat right in that he says if a CC team were to be established, they'd struggle for true supporters as everyone already has a team. I don't think it'd affect crowds as a mix of teams should get home and away support.

Do you know the Bulldogs thread was the only active non football thread on IS? There were whispers years back about going over the the AFL part to rev them up but they'd have flooded and annoyed the football side. It wasn't too big though.

The bulldogs have their own little spot but perhaps they'd like to post in here too.

Again and again the numbers are staggering for white elephant for the sake of it ventures. CBloody hell. I don't know or have exact numbers but surely some of that money, apples to oranges state gov wise, can be invested in a Tassie team. Of course, the AFL have them around their finger.

I miss the old system. First grade, reserve, third, SG Ball, Harold Matthews. GF used to be great with all 3 grades and lots of familiar faces in the reserve grade GF. Also having all 3 grades of game day was great to get in early and watch some footy.

Players are debuting much younger now and I think most of the reserve grade levels play in the respective regional comps which have also mixed around over the years. Syd, CC, New is some mangled type of competition. QLD Cup does well as a feeder. I'm not entirely informed but my perception is that there are fewer players, games and teams compared to the 90s and 2000s where they grades were multiple.
