The Australian government can reportedly terminate its $600 million support of a PNG NRL team any time in the next decade without reason.

And there's one scenario in which they'll dump it without a second thought 💥

Not sure I have the strength to acknowledge this rort, it's just too infuriating that my head will blow. I leave it to you good folk to fight the good fight here.

Info graphics help me interpret numbers better. The sum looks insane. I don't know how much government investment football gets but this seems like a golden gift.

ROI is important and I wonder how PNG will entice players to live there. They'll undoubtedly have so many games in Australia that they'll be based here a bit longer.

Baffles me why the NRL doesn't do 2 leagues and pro-rel between those.

Bring in teams from Adelaide, Perth and Ipswich and bring back old school stalwarts like North Sydney and Newtown. Get the leagues up to 12 teams in each.

1 or 2 up each season. Split the massive amounts of cash they have between the 2 leagues on a 60/40 or 70/30 split so teams don't go bust when they're relegated.

Mate it just doesnt have an appeal outside of two states.... Melbourne Storm, Im told, are very successful but a second NRL franchise down here would go highly unnoticed (even more so than the Storm) ... Grown men throwing a ball to each other as an excuse to bashing the shit out of each other is a little uncouth :)

It doesn't to Victorians but there's 13 million Australians that do care, a lot. Not sure if you appreciate how massive it is in NSW and Qld.

I didn't mention Melbourne as a second team.

Adelaide and Perth both had teams during the super league and were reasonably successful.

Yeah mate fully aware of what it means to NSW and QLD I travel there quite abit and colleges and clients cant stop talking about the bloody thing :P..

As for Adelaide and Perth, I though the reason those teams folded was because nobody attended?

Anyway, absolutely no skin off my nose... just wanted to throw my 2 cents in???? If there is an appetite for it in other states, I agree, going two leagues pro rel would make sense :)

They folded because when the super league / ARL war ended and a new league, the NRL, was formed.

Surprised also the AFL doesn't give it a crack. There'd be more than enough AFL second tier sides in Vic, WA and the SA. Even the NT.

Not that I watch any AFL but there'd be a full home and away season as a plus.

There was talk of it a while ago but I guess the VFL, WAFL and SANFL are very strong comps in their own right and wouldnt want to lose their best clubs to this.....

Don't know the inside info but Norths just can't get up and running for they keep trying, only recently they NRL/Norths were talking about setting up in Perf but it recently got pulled back.
Norths Leagues Club at Cammeray is flourishing always the times I'm there - turning over bucks so who knows.

The PNG one as mentioned is total political beat up, HTF it works considering they are saying its tax free for the players doesn't add up in fairness to the Aus Clubs.
Plus how many players are going to be enticed being based there ?!
Maybe Qldr's and pacific islanders mostly I'd say.
The game doesn't need expansion in melb, Storm does enough for the game there, I know ex pats Qldr's living there are ticket holders, its pretty packed most games.
Adelaide Perf didn't work as mentioned during the media Murdoch war against the NRL - floudered moment NRL won the battle.
I think it can survive with the main 2 States and their Vegas openning matchs they got enough resource.

Why the need for the massive suck up, as I was of the understanding that Benny Wong reset such relationships back in 2022 and had this lot in her back pocket. What's happened since those celebrated and heralded trips?

There's a strong chance that an AFL reserves will be up and running in a few years time - given the mindset AFL fans generally have such a thing would attract more interest than a 2nd tier - and would probably relegate the WAFL and SANFL a peg further down media interest.
