Good stuff, very interesting. Coincidentally, the man-on-man pressing is what I am working with my team on doing, as when we are pressing and allowing the opponent a free man at the back we have not been that effective. It is interesting (to me) that my team's main concern with the man-on-man pressing is being left one-on-one in the back line, and I'm trying to get them to trust themselves.

I'm interested at what level you are coaching, Keeper?

One of our former state TDs, who I was under the tutelage of, later coached an NPL senior men's team. I was surprised he didn't have more success.

Haven't seen him to chat since. I asked a parent of one of his players, a high level former cricketer, and who is really smart bloke, why he thought the former Football Tas TD hadn't had more success? He thought his messages to players were too complex, more like an AL team. Obviously, his son passed this on too.

Have not had a chat to any of our NPL coaches for a while, but a few years back your Full Pressing game plan is more complex than most teams' tactical game plans in our NPL. Some of them made national finals too in the knockout Auswide NPL comp.

Fair play to you, Keeper!

Alex from the podcast, Johnny Kasich, Football Lover and Zimbos should be interested in this video. All are coaching at a decent level.

The graphics in the video are a good educational device too.

Interesting that the man marking system is adopted in the attacking third, but teams adopt the zonal 4-4-2 flat midfield in the back two thirds of the pitch?

I've noticed the flat 4-4-2 zonal marking in the back two thirds of the pitch for about a decade or so, but not the subtle change in full pressing in the front third in the last few years.

having a 4-4-2 in the middle rather than the back seems to be better to nullify a team good at keeping possession. The other team can be more risk adverse because losing the ball is more dangerous closer to goal

The formation and tactics in the middle third and defensive third haven't changed much over the last decade - not like how gegenpressing in the front third has.

Personally, without going into a lot of detail, I like my teams to be as high as possible, stop them from playing through the middle/ force them out wide and then the wide player press which triggers everyone else to press their nearest man. This leaves the opposition's wide players on the other side free but if we arrive on time, don't let them turn and open their bodies to the opposite side, they won't be able to switch the ball quick enough to exploit the space on the opposite side. I would say it's an aggressive approach. I rather win the ball higher up and beat a few players to get a shot on goal then win it deep and have to breakdown 11 players to get a shot on goal.
