The Australian Championship Thread

Football Australia has confirmed the group stage draw for the inaugural Australian Championship including two blockbuster opening round fixtures set to launch a bold new chapter for Australian football in October.

Opening Fixtures

  • Friday, 10 October – South Melbourne FC v Sydney Olympic FC at Lakeside Stadium, Melbourne
  • Saturday, 11 October – Preston Lions FC v NPL Premier (NSW) at BT Connor Reserve, Melbourne
Round two feature matches will showcase NSW-based Foundation Clubs. Apia Leichhardt FC hosts Sydney United FC at Leichhardt Oval on Friday, 17 October in what promises to be a fierce battle for 3 points, and Wollongong Wolves FC will return home to WIN Stadium and face the reigning NPL VIC Premiers on Saturday, 18 October.
Happy with hosting the opening match and hope the club AND the FA do everything int heir powers to make this a success..

VIC football fans (and Im sure our friends at Preston share the sentiment) you are ALL urged to come down and see what this is all about. Put aside your prejudices and past animosity and at least check out a match or two of this new fledgeling league... who knows you might like it?

ONLY thing I question is "annual tournament"??? This sounds dangerously like saying it is ALWAYS going to be this format .... NOT HAPPY ....

Quotes attributable to Football Australia Chief Executive Officer, James Johnson:

“The Australian Championship is an exciting new annual tournament bringing together Foundation Clubs with their rich histories and top-performing NPL Clubs to showcase their talents and culture to our growing national football audience.

At this point in time it is an annual tournament but JJ is on record as saying that hopefully the Championship will become full home and away. That’s contingent on a number of things so I think it’s too early to worry about the format beyond this initial season.

I know, its a bit knit-picking from my side.... you're right :)

Problem is ten play is a pain to find the channel and launch it'll do for a start I suppose
Mate you are looking at it from an entertainment league persepctive with, what you have been accostomed to, in all the bells and whistles.... Being on ONE channel FTA (with at least even basic broadcast production) is infinitely better than 8 scattered NPL channels with single camera footage and volunteer announcers...

you won't need the remote when going through Lakesides turnstiles - you'll go bugga I'm seeing this "LIVE" then go to Prestons "LIVE" following night - win win MCG and you'll feel your in a crowd unlike being out numbered by seagulls avoiding buckets hahaha

MCG, if you DO attend, hit me up, I owe you a beer or two for being such a mean prick....

Even cooler would be 16 x club h/a Championship in 2026 AND 16 x club NPL National end of season tournament (8 x EOI clubs plus 8 x federation premiers) to decide which two clubs get promoted into 2027 Championship ........
JJ seems to have indicated (if I recall correctly) that he wants the champions league format to be the process of promotion for a h&a second division down the track
