World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

It all hypotheticals.

What I do know right now as a fact , is Teague is in the national squad and he couldn't cut it in Portugese liga 2.
Mooy wasn't successful at St Mirren, before being one of the Socceroos most skillful players.

While I agree to some extent to the drop in standards, the other issue is the change in football, many here complain that Scottish football is more hoffball & more direct, this was the EPL in the 90s & early 2000s.
Look at the EPL sides, the British type players are getting less & less in the EPL, football is a lot more about skill than it was in the 90s & 2000s.
I stand by my original statement, we have not produced too many players with the technical skill level of Kewell & Viduka.
Every kid that shows potential is called the new Kewell or new Viduka, never have I heard a player called the new Trimboli or new Markovski.
Hoof ball is harsh, but it is true that we were on the physical end of the spectrum. Countries that were on the physical end of the spectrum certainly declined over the last 20 years. Even Ireland was a big team in the early 2000s.

Having said that, it's implausible that removing ais, academies and a nyl has no negative effects and we have never had all 3 (we had a nyl and ais for the start of the a league and now have academies). So our decline was worse. Looks like the decline is reversing a bit mind u, but don't think we get back to where we were until we make sure all teams have an academy and a nyl

Is anyone actually confident that we will get anything out of this game with Indonesia? The FA and Paramount/Ch10 will be hoping we do it hard and get to the playoffs then the intercontinental play offs as it will bring in more views from more games being played.

Appears Beach was training with Glover today. I thought he'd be off to the Gulf already. Maybe one session before flying. Sure looked like him.

I don't know where the goals come from the midfield is lacking creativity and the forwards aren't super in form maybe Boyle looks our most likely scorer.

I can't wait to watch Arzani dribble the ball into 3 Chinese defenders, lose possession and witness a dangerous fast break.

It'll be Behich and Miller as the outlets. Obvious ball to Irvine. Stumble, backpass, lose possession. Miller did overlap nicely against China last time so hopefully more of that.

Been the best CM/CDM in the ALM this year. Similarly when Mooy came back to the AL. Wouldnt be surprised if he went overseas for some serious coin.

Because the players that were better than him last year went to better leagues.
Besides, why do you call him the best CDM in the league? What backs this up?

Looking at the A-league in insulation

In Thurgate, Milanovic, J Hollman, Botic

Out Teague, Tilio, Taggart and to a lesser extent Arzani and I would be optimistic.

Hollman another. Such a good handy player but others have something of a bigger status and that keeps him out. He's got to get overseas.

Velupillay was this category but Popovic likes him and he has done the hard yards. I don't mind this because I keeps everyone else on their toes.

I have a weird feeling. I'm not confident in the team, but expecting the win. Anything but the win will be extremely disappointing, but noting Popa's games style and selections I expect an ugly performance, with little structured play in the final 3rd.

Playing around a bit and provided Australia win, I'd take a China win against Saudi. It would present a viable threat but then Australia can hopefully beat China and they'll be dented Indonesia away later on. Ideally Japan thrash both ME teams for a GD dent but any win is fine. Indonesia Bahrain ending a draw is fairly important but Indonesia winning it is alright as they still have Japan away which is a likely 0.

Dream is Aus on 13 and then everyone else on 7. We'd be fine by then given the GD and would need to prevent a big Japan and Saudi loss. Saudi would need to beat Bahrain away and beat Australia heavily.

Aus 11
Ind 9
KSA 9
China 7
Bahrain 6

This above situation doesn't exactly help too much. While in our hands, we have a tough 2 final games. I guess the benefit is draw security an only defeats would mean a harsh blow.

I'm still stunned that after 6 matches, we have only won one game and sit second in the pool.
Most group games have seen something odd or very late occur. That's football of course but it's pretty uncanny.

The highlights and stats show how much Australia controlled Indonesia away and there were couple of very good chances.

We were stupid and very lucky at the end against Saudi. I'm not entirely sure about the late offside call but I'll take it. Freak Bahrain goals and Japan away was a professional display. Bloody football.

Trust our group to get the pot 6 team with the bloody Low Countries trained pool of players though.

All our own fault so far but I do wonder how things may have been in other groups. A tad boring with all the familiar faces and tight run in.
