World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Re Triantis, watching Hibs v Celtic, for 15 mins, Hibs just couldn't get any time on the ball.

As soon as Hibs effected a turnover, Celtic won it back immediately. Boyle and Miller played for Hibs too. Triantis was essentially playing in Ball Possession Opposition the whole time as part of a Hibs team unit trying to maintain shape. Hard to appraise his form.

As I've said previously, Scotland plays an awful style of football for most teams I've seen in the league. They can't maintain possession for more than a few passes, then they lose the ball and yet more transitional play occurs.

Conversely, Celtic play superb football. I can't believe Celtic is in the same league, as they are so dominant. Unless Aussies play for Celtic or Rangers, it is a backward step playing in Scotland. Thankfully, Rogic and Mooy played for Celtic.

Popa doesn't rate Scotland given how few players he has selected in the Socceroos, considering how many Aussies play there.

I've watched highlights of most recent Melb Vic games, and saw most of the game against WSW.

Do posters think Langerak should be in the Socceroos squad?

15 minutes is way too short to assess triantis. Think he is on track to be a pretty special mid to be honest

Let me put it this way

Triantis singlehandedly makes the spfl enjoyable to watch

I don't recall the last time we had a player like that ;)

He is outstanding at shielding the ball, taking players on, carrying the ball, outstanding passing range, gets passes away quickly under pressure, elite passing range, above average aerial duels and set piece threat and has a bit of creativity. He is also elite in his work rate and defensive qualities by the standard of the league

His 2 remedial areas are concentration lapses (which was a problem at cb, but not at 6 at least at spfl level) and crossing (who cares since he rarely drifts wide)

Based purely on having our best 3 keepers yes. I would have given the spot to a keeper with prospects in the future. It's the right idea with Glover though I'd have picked Chapman.

This is 15 minutes from Hibs worst game since the new manager came in. Pretty rough assessment based on that.

There's a good highlights package of Triantis floating around. It's worth watching.

Edit: Check it out here. Triantis won't be in the Scotland forever

His team could barely touch the ball against a high quality team.

Unless players perform well against Celtic and Rangers, it is hard to rate them because the other teams play such dross. They are incapable of keeping the ball for sustained periods - and - able to build up from back to front, patiently, interspersed with rhythm changes.

Popa has only selected Boyle, Miller and Triantis, who all play for Hibs.

Nesbit needs to play in a more technical league.

He, Devlin, Nieuw, Strain, Jack Iredale, Apostolos Stam, et al, haven't been selected for the Socceroos. Popa doesn't rate it.

Hibs beat Celtic a couple of weeks earlier. Triantis one of the best for Hibs.

A draw v Rangers where Triantis amongst the best for Hibs again.

Do you have access to hibs v rangers a few weeks ago? That was a really impressive game for triantis and the possession a bit more shared (nearly 800 completed aggregate passes with hibs having around 40% possession)

One has to watch all of a player's performance. Highlights can be misleading.

I interpreted that as superb Celtic performance, outclassing a team who shouldn't be playing in the same league.

I've seen the same awful second ball style of play from Dundee, Dundee United, St Mirren, Motherwell, Queen Of The South, Hearts, Hibs ( also playing against Rangers), Kilmarnock, Ross County and St Johnstone.

It was some time ago, but Triantis was better against Rangers. As a midfielder some of his U 23 Aus team cohorts, or younger u20s, have a better skill set for international football.

Players will improve their 1v1 body on body duels, heading duels in Scotland, but 1v1 attacking skills, first touch, handling speed, running with the ball, positional play in possession, will go backwards, or at best stagnate. Players go to Scotland and don't improve these facets of play, unless playing for Celtic and Rangers.

I'd surmise all Scottish national team players play for Celtic or Rangers, or play in the EPL or English Championship.

I f other teams played like Celtic, who play a quality possession game, albeit at a lower level, Scotland would be a good destination for Aussies.

Queen of the south play in the third division

triantis is just there on loan. True, highlights can be misleading, but in his case his highlights like arzani and robertson are pretty similar to his general play. I'd say 15 minutes watching a player is also misleading

Players don't always have a lot of choice where they go on loan. If he plays well enough its not his fault it is in the spfl. I really rate him

I saw Triantis play Rangers some time back, when he probably wasn't as good as now.

I'm not saying Triantis is a poor player, but he plays in a team that plays lousy football.

I've seen Triantis play games as a CB for the Aus U 23s. He struggled.

Only have access to Scottish Cup games.

he also struggled for hibs at cb but took off when playing in the midfield. Hopefully he plays midfield for the roos

players change very quickly at his age imo

mo toure wasn't the greatest for our u23s but has improved a lot in the last 12 months

But he rates MV this year?

Are you talking about Hibs or the Socceroos?
Hibs
I do agree that scotland is regressive in style. Having said that I do think dominating the scottish league as comprehensively as he has at the age of 21 still "counts" and counts more than dominating the a league.

Style and quality are not the same thing
