World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

They have over 60 professional teams, we have 13, they are in a different league. They are literally the third most professional league in the world. Its basically England vs Ireland in football.
and this refutes anything I've said how?

I just don't rate the Scottish league, now I've had a look at plenty of Cup games.

Conversely, I think Celtic play fantastic football. Rangers are quality too.

It can't be just lots of bad days, because the rest of the Scottish clubs just don't play modern football. The players don't appear to be coached effectively to support the ball carriers.

Boyle and Miller from Hibs, for mine, ATM, are two of the Socceroos weakest players - and- the only Scottish players selected, besides teammate Triantis. Popa has selected more AL players than from Scotland.

I was pleased to see Grazor make the point , that Irvine is a fantastic player off the ball. This often goes unnoticed. I've unfairly highlighted his two touch passing having slow handling speed. True. He more than makes up for this in so many other ways though. It would be difficult to replace him. He has played every minute of this season's Bundesliga.

Popa thought his two best players were Behich and Ryan against Indo.
Last night 2 of our goals came from Scottish playing Roos. Miller won the penalty that Boyle converted and got a goal himself.

I think you have an opinion, stick to it and see what you want to see. Triantis is dominating Scotland. He has been excellent against both Celtic and Rangers (your yard stick) and MOTM in most other games.

Triantis is an effective screener, long passer, can dribble past players, is a scoring threat from open play and set pieces.

This is dismissed because it's Scotland, or because it isn't Celtic/Rangers (he proved himself against them though!), or because you didn't like his youth performances as a centre back, a role he's not even in now.

Triantis has developed and isn't that player anymore. I don't think it's fair to pigeon hole him. I think it's worth having an open mind about him.

Unpopular opinion noting the Popa love-fest currently taking place.

If not for a Ryan worldly of a save and a shit indo pen takers, this game could have been alot different.

Very good point, Huddo.

Live, I thought, and probably Popa and Irvine conceded, Indo dominated between the pen boxes, but lost the game from poor play in both boxes.

It might be different when I look at the replay, like Grazor is finding, but 5-1 flattered us.

When I recorded stats for the previous games we should have beaten Bahrain both times, and Indo in Jakarta. Japan should have beaten us, whilst we shaded Saudi, albeit getting a lucky decision with their disallowed goal.

Two things I really liked from the game (and are linked) were Geria and Burgess's forward passing into midfield. I also liked how quick and aggressively we countered when we went. The former helped the latter.

Take Velupillay's goal, it was started by an aggressive forward pass by Geria, strong work from Taggart and great forward pass, and a lovely run and finish by Velupillay. I want to see more goals like that.

I think that's a model that can be really effective for us. Defensively robust but also aggressive when we decide to attack, creating higher percentage (easier to convert) scoring opportunities. That + set pieces has some potential for us. I think it'd work better in a 4-3-3 where we have a bit more in midfield, but that's just me.

Agree, but I would rather not have a nail biter against Saudi on the 10th. Hopefully Bahrain do us a favour on the 5th.
Yep - Tuesday will put a lot of that into perspective.

Not sure why, but one thing that always sticks in my mind, is the morning after we qualified for Brazil 2014, walking into the newsroom I was interning at, and I dropped the fact on them that, once all the games were played anyways, if we lost the game the night before against Iraq, we still qualified - and then all the non-football writers just being like "oh, so what was the whole beat up about must-win?"

Hypothetical now, but if Triantis played instead of O’Neill perhaps the possession stats would look quite different.

I guess Poppa has his reasons, perhaps Triantis didn’t train well after the jet lag.
O'Neill is a pretty good player.

I'm yet to be convinced that Triantis is better. O'Neill is playing in a far better league too.

There are some talented younger players in this position, with quality all round skill sets.

Jake Hollman ( more box to box or 8), Valadon, Youlley, Okon and Deli, look to have superb skill sets.

I think Thurgate should be considered too. From what I've seen he is playing a bit better than Teague ATM.

If we beat China, we are guaranteed a playoff spot irrespective of other results.

As for the guaranteed spot, its looking like it'll be decided in Saudi Arabia on the last match day.

We may end up regretting not beating them at home.

Half an hour into the replay and I think we are completely dominant to be honest

don't look at possession stats. Without the ball we rarely press high and we seem content to sit back unless there is a pressing trigger. I think the pressing trigger is if the goal keeper touches it - poppa must have identified that indonesia's goal keeper isn't safe with his feet or something. Then we will rush with a 5 man press and the other five denfending in our own half. We weren't even pressing up to the half way line, we were content to sit back in a deep block as they passed the ball round the back four

We also are very fast and positive with the ball. This means more mistakes and turnovers but also more chances

Despite Irvine's comments this is not a game plan where you get 70% possession, it is a game plan where you concede possession.

Miller and Geria very strong so far for different reasons. A lot of attacks start through geria and millers mobility and strength off the ball blunting indonesia is blunting them. Despite all indonesia's possession they are looking toothless whereas we look constantly dangerous.

Since they missed a penalty maybe a 5-2 score is fair, but it definitely looks like a flogging on the replay

I also missed on first viewing that taggart got the assist for vellupilay's goal with a very nice chip
Quality post, Grazor.

wouldn't surprise me if Japan conspire to get the Socceroos eliminated

they still remember "forever in our shadow"
Do you ever post anything positive about the Socceroos, or Matildas, or A League? You obviously want to see Australian teams lose.

You collectively call the Socceroos the Shockaroos, or the Poofteroos, and the Matildas the Lezzoroos!

Why don't you cut and paste some of the views about the Indo game you and your acolytes post in that right wing nut job cesspit forum you frequent, Lupi? They beggar belief! Why do you collectively despise your own national football teams?

For football followers who despise the Socceroos, you sure put in a lot of time discussing them, thinking about them and watching them.

sorry but this just isn't true

I don't know where you get this idea he's dominating Scotland from... he's just an average player at Hibs, which is his level and he hasn't been excellent against Celtic and Rangers. He barely touched the ball in the recent cup game.

quite a few lies here champ

I've never referred to the Socceroos as the 'Poofteroos'. My views are from a realist perspective.

I'm not here to market Australian football. That's the job of the corporates and administrators, and unfortunately that seems to be their only priority. All I've seen over the past 20 years is Australian football go backwards whilst administrators find new colours of lipstick to apply to the pig.

Wow!

60 pro teams! Impressive!

The Dutch only have pro teams in the Eredivisie. The tier 2 in the Netherlands, the Eerste, is semi-pro.

Japan are knocking on the door of being a world powerhouse. About a decade ago, Arsene Wenger anointed Japan as having a world class development system.

Your frenemies and acolytes use the word Poofteroos. You never challenge them, which tacitly implies your acceptance.

no, that's called freedom of speech and I'm not going to waste my time arguing over hyperbole. You must live a sheltered life if such language offends you.

Triantis has been one of/if not Hibs best in this unbeaten run. He's had something like 8 MOTM performances. Was one of their best in their big results v Celtic and Rangers. Is arguably in the SPFL team of the year atm. I think it's fair to say he's dominating - but everyone might have a different bar for that.

lol? he has consistently been in team of the week, never been substituted. Hibs are the only team to beat Celtic this year besides Rangers... what are you on about?
