World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Genuinely surprised at the good play by Teague. Only have seen him intermittently this year and the last was when Victory lost 3 zip and he was woeful, not marking players in the goal square even. Is this a coach problem for Victory?

What made him good?

We don’t agree. Let’s just leave it there.

Teague will be in the next squad, let’s see if he picks players from the poor performing teams in Scotland for the next window. Time will tell.

After 2 wins Popa has done what he had to and I can’t see it changing.

Teague (and Irvine) last night were like microcosms of the entire performance. Both were excellent first half but both were largely ineffective second half.

As for Boyle and Borello second half - I was shouting at my telly to get them off and get Caceres and Arzani on. I was also shouting at my telly to get Miller off after too many brain explosions so at least Popa heard that.

Karacic is not the answer though. Strain is by some distance our best RB.

What the fuck is a " goal square " ?
lol - my invention I guess, to signify an area approximately the width and length of the goal in front of the goal. To differentiate from the goal box or penalty box. Something that happens on the edge of the penalty box may be peripheral to scoring a goal. something that happens in the goal square usually has direct consequences to goals being scored or not. Hence leaving a player unmarked in the goal square (as Teague did in that game) when he was the closest outfield player to him and just shrugging his shoulders when the goal went in wasn't indicative of a player that is/was switched on.

so essentially the 6 yard box, give or take?

You called my response unhinged, why was it unhinged? We know youre a Teague fan boy, but what did he actually do besides wave through the "Chinese" attackers?

I don't understand how performing above expectation in a better league is poor? Teague is nailing it in Victory, performing well above expectation with MV positioned in....(looks up ladder)...... 5th!?

Unhinged because you said I was saying he would play EPL, unhinged cause you now say I am a fanboy. I don't give a fuck. I am just saying he's a good player. Also unhinged in your tone.

If you think a player at Ross County is miles ahead that is up to you. And probably just you by the sounds of it.

Thankyou on Irvine, credit where credit is due 1st half and previous game but was MIA alot through the 2nd, he's the leader you don't disappear.
Teague I get him not being anywhere near as effective as sstages in the 1st half.
Debut, we lacked control of the ball for many many minutes at times, and alot of clearing long balls to no where let alone Boyle couldn't hang onto anything, I'll give Teague some rope.
Borello is not the same you see in the AL therefore he's struggling to step up this level.

I was using hyperbole with reference to the EPL remark. Im calling you a fan boy because even when he is mediocre, he is seen by you as being a great player. You're the one saying the stats justified Teague being there, but you didn't give us any stats.

If you think a failure from Portugal liga 2 can wipe the boots of a player he's never beaten, that has won the JWM aswell as multiple trophies for his club, that's up to you. Teague has done nothing except play under Popa. For that reason and only that he was selected.

If your going to mention "stats", back up your claim, I want to see the stats.

Genuine question - on what basis do people believe that system/style that Popavic is wanting the team to play is complicated and difficult for the players to learn? Is there any evidence for this or has it just been repeated so many times by punters that it has become “fact”?

I can’t see anything in the way the Socceroos play that should be beyond any professional player understanding it? I mean, Miller seems to be far from the sharpest tool in the shed and often makes fundamental mistakes, but he seems to be locked-in in the team at the moment. If he can understand and implement the style of play, why (apparently) can’t Ballard, Triantis, Irankunda?
Popa is a club coach he will put he’s system first and then sees who can fit into it.

Also at international level you don’t have the luxury of training a team for a week and then playing a game on the weekend you have minimum 2 days of training and so the players need to pick up he’s ideas quickly so I’m assuming he has selected players based on that over others who need time to learn he’s ways?

Hopefully when we qualify we hope to see some new faces especially the ones that are needed to be in this squad.

I'd like to see Irakunda, Kuol & Toure all get into the squad to understand what is required. These days unless you are a Messi, you cannot be a luxury player, all players need to work their socks off.

I just hope Popa is using these games to qualify first and then see the other players that could be in the squad once we have qualified, agree there is a lot of talent that could be in use as well.
