World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Surely the camp is more about bringing in players that are close to selection & blooding younger players that have a chance to make the squad in the future? Let's be real - Bonetig, Esposito & Okon-Engstler aren't going to make the squad next month. Like you said, Triantis would've been told that he's in the squad. If it turns out that Greece has got in there in front of us, then the only person to blame is Popovic for not giving Triantis his debut against Indonesia & or China in March. If we fucking lose another one...
If poppa loses him the fans will definitely turn on him

I will just about top myself if Triantis rejects us for Greece.

He's the one I most wanted selected in the last few years - him and Irankunda.
DUDE!!!! Its just the national team, chill out... Yeah it will be sad if he declares for another country but one player is the LEAST of our problems now...

3 Players and counting if triantis switches

That makes 3 out of four young players who i could see making the big 5 ij the next 2-3 years...(maybe irankunda and toure can get there too in that time frame) thats most of the elite end of our talent development

TBH I don't think Segecic has done enough just yet for selection. Line ball call, but I can see why he's not there. For now.

The harder thing to see, though, is why, if he's not, some of the others are. Borello being number one example.

Hopefully he isnt a dual national haha

The kid is 22 years old and hasnt been capped..... THATS the problem, he left these shores without ANY commitment from the Australian national setup barring a few under ages matches....

I dont know his situation or anyone connected to him but based on the snippets Ive seen from him he wont get a call up to Greek national squad, too old to debut and too much competition in midfield... maybe its his manager trying to raise his value, I mean Sunderland signed him for 4 years, surely the clock is ticking and they want more than the peanuts Hibs would have spent????

Do you think we should be more proactive giving youth a go before they are in our best 23?

A year ago he was clearly on a rapid upward trajectory but not in our top 6 mids

Looking at the greek national team mid on wiki it doesnt look mind blowing on paper. Certainly looks achievable for him to win a starting spot in the next couple of years

in short YES.... ABSOLUTELY.

Problem is always the tyranny of distance but we don't as a federation, actively promote friendlies within our immediate geographic vicinity to BLOOD local Australian talent...

I would think only us invested fans would care. Most fans and other people who attend matches won't even realise.

Given the choice between the Arnold method and the Popa method I would take the latter. The desperate public chasing of Volpato and Robertson was a pretty low point. Popa said he wants people who want to play for us because it is an honour (and a well paid international team if you go to a world cup). As long as there is communication with these guys behind the scenes that should be enough.

If Triantis wants to play for Greece, this is his choice, not Greece getting in first. He has every opportunity to play for us, second squad in a row and with Irvine out there is a place up for grabs.

Having said that, unless he was particularly poor or underdone in the previous window, I would have much preferred he received game time.

Still a team washing through some of the stars of teh past, with oyun exciting players... Karetsas my current fave.. being fought over by 3-4 huge Euro clubs... is only 17...

Mouzakitis (as much as he plays for the bastards from the port) is only 18 and will be a beast. Zafeiris also pretty young I think.. Konstantelia and Karetsas will also play more centrally as the "elder statesman" move in ... not as easy to break into....

well said.

Online claims that Hibs sporting director, Malky Mackay, said on TV yesterday that Triantis had been selected by both us and Greece. Apparently Greece has upcoming matches on the dame dates as us. I have no idea if any of this is true.

That's true and Triantis shouldn't be on the outer anyway. I think the possibles who are eligible for the camp can stake one final claim. Many will be omitted.

The FA need to be proactive when it comes to locking in these promising young players that are also eligible to play for other countries.

It seems like they are acting a bit complacent assuming they are not good enough to represent the other countries that they eligible for or they will change their mind later on if they are already involved in one of their youth teams, you can’t afford to like that when the current fifa rules make it easier to look these duel national passport holder players.

In terms of Triantis’s situation he should have been capped two years ago after he’s successful feat with the Mariners instead Arnie and the coaches assumed we could beat Argentina in that pointless friendly game in China…

I’ve also got to question whether the environment is the right one when it comes to capping these young players especially how the likes of Robertson and Irankunda have been handled.

Here is where he said it.

Cannot wait to lose him... 😞

For fuck sake!!! Just had a look on FotMob & Greece are playing 2 fucking friendlies in the same week as us. Surely he's not about to give up the chance to play 2 WC qualifiers?!!! They start their WC qualification later in the year with Denmark, Belarus & Scotland in the group, so would be a good chance to at least get to the next stage.
