What or who got you into football?

My first memory was watching my dad’s Italia 90 recordings on VHS. It was probably around 1992. Some of the games I watched (over and over) included:
Spain vs Yugoslavia
Belgium vs England
Cameroon vs England
Italy vs Ireland
Germany vs Czechoslovakia

I was hooked from this point. I then went with my dad to my first NSL game. West Adelaide vs South Melbourne and we won 3-0. I think this was also 1992. I became absolutely obsessed with the NSL from this point. I never missed an episode of on the ball and world soccer. Suddenly I was skipping church on Sunday mornings to watch the Serie A highlights on SBS with my old man. My mum wasn’t happy.

I would go to the NSL every week. To support West Adelaide and then to support whoever was playing Adelaide City. A lot of Greeks used to go to Adelaide City home games and support the opposition. Good times!

I also have great memories of Australia 1993. I went to Brazil vs Saudi Arabia but I remember watching every game of that tournament religiously. Brazil vs Ghana was a great final. This was before internet/ Pay TV etc so having these international youth teams play in Australia was a big thing.
Great upbringing and read W A H.
Luv the Adelaide football history.

I was really impressed on how diverse and inclusive the a-league administers were. They even had particular rounds for particular groups of people. That made me pick up a book about the world game, and I haven't looked back.

An old Sth African friend got me into football when the Socceroos played Iran back in 1997 with much heart ache at not making France 98. I then took up the sport after playing AFL most of my life as with Thai Boxing. I fell in love with football and became top goal scorer for my club as a winger and res goal keeper (Madness i know). I brough any book about Australian football i could find, when the ALM came about i had no team (Western Syndey) as WSW were not formed back then i liked the underdogs so followed the Nixs. My old Sth African friend passed away a few years back now however he left me with knowledge and love for the beautiful game. Things i didnt find playing AFL it was like going to a job u hated for me.

Looking back I wish I collected more AA football shirts so I'd have

Kewell at Liverpool
Viduka at middlesbrough
Etc

I'd still probably only get Aussie's shirts for clubs I support I think.

Will hang myself before I get seen in a Bresciano Palermo jersey for example hahaha.

Probably should try and get some GK Schwarzer or Bosnich jerseys from their time at Chelsea (Bosnich's might come with a side order Coca-Cola and Bell's Ice). I can't think of any other Aussies (other than Kerr) that played for them. And definitely not for Juve (unless I get Montemurro on the back for the lulz). Actually, could always go for Vieri. Just did a search on transfermarket for Australians at Juve, and also got Troisi there, and Jess Vanstrattan weirdly that I don't remember at all

EDIT: Just did a similar check for Chelsea and Australians, and just got Bosnich and Schwarzer as above - and Kerr obviously as well - but two separate players with the surname 'Mitchell' who are unrelated from what I gather:

I would love that Juve Pirlo shirt hahaha - am aiming to add one to my collection. Used to have a post World Cup 2006 Pirlo shirt, but not sure where it went...
Whenever I buy Juve shirts, I tend to just but Del Piero 10 on it

My Roo shirts I'm trying to do the same thing. Was initially getting shirts with my own name on them (so that I have an excuse if I get told to donate them - but then again, I can make myself look famous), so have now started doing players that wore said shirt:

2010 Home - Grella 13
2005 Away - Bresciano 23
2004 Home (Adidas concept that was never played in) - Kewell 10
2018 Home - Cahill 4
I have a 2001 home that I need to find the right nameset/font etc to get Viduka 9 on it

Have been doing the same with my Chelsea batch - gotten a Drogba, Lampard and Zola shirt - next couple will probably be Terry and Ballack.

Your Roo ones are bang on ! to replace your name hahaha
I've never wanted my name wanted the player.
Oh Zola is a rippa one but we both have vested interest with the Azzuri :)

David Mitchell - a Socceroo from the 80's, played for a variety of Euro clubs including Chelsea for a short time. One of the early AA's, along with Eddie Krncevic.

Another Australian who played for Chelsea was Tony Dorigo. Alas, another one of those Australian-born players who didn't play for Australia, who I just discovered through Wikipedia was called up for the Socceroo's 1986 WC campaign, but his club manager (at Aston Villa at the time) didn't allow him to travel. Lived long enough in England to then qualify for English citizenship, and played for England.

Ah how did I forget about Dorigo!

Not 100% sure but I think Frank Mitchell may have played during WWII when he was in England with the RAAF.

Dave Mitchell is a well known Socceroo from the 80s who also played for Rangers, Chelsea, Feyenoord, Eintracht Frankfurt and others. Scottish born but grew up in Adelaide.
