World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

@AliG040803 is happy with the squad

For me Toure being selected is a pretty big silver lining mind you. Not sure if he will play since he will be jetlagged and new

Okon-Engstler is also eligible for Belgium & Italy.
yeah, the optimist in me is hoping we are learning our lessons and being proactive keeping in dual nationals, and it isnt just nepotism. Hopefully we can win back triantis, robbo, volpato and segecic.

Can an email be sent to both FAs?
Lol obviously both FA's not likely to be interested in the present or near future but if Popa's evaluation proves correct and the player himself is given time he might have a rethink.

My prediction is Popa will stack the left side with City players after they were so strong down that side in the GF:

Something like this:

Tilio | Taggart | Boyle
Behich | Teague | O’Neill | Miller
Trewin | Burgess | Circati
Ryan

Wouldn’t at all be surprised to see Okon-Engster start for O’Neill.

Personally would love to see M Toure start for Taggart if not jet lagged.

FAILED!

You only included Behich once in the line-up.

Not specifically aimed at you.

Not sure I understand the grief Behich gets. I think he's a great fullback. Had a good game for city the other night. Gets up and down the wing non stop and bleeds for the jersey.

His team I reckon will be.

Ryan
Degenek-Circati-Burgess
Geria----------------------Behich
---------Teague-O'Neill----------
Boyle-----------------------Yazbek
--------------Duke------------------

For his experience at international level, he still can't defend, can't cross, doesn't get assists and always passes back stifling attacks. This post will hopefully jinx it all for Thursday. It's frustrating Bos isn't available.

My prediction is Popovic goes:

McGree Taggart Boyle
Teague O'Neill
Behich---------------------------Miller
Burgess Circati Geria
Ryan
This will surely be the 11. Maybe Metcalfe for O'Neill. Personally I'd start Mo Toure to have him on for as long as possible but bringing him later has its advantages.

said it all in a nutshell re NT games for Muz.
He sure is fine at APL levels but NT, frustrating, sure he does his job but man he kills our attack going forward so so so many times.
The stats guys must luv how many times he touch's the ball and pass's, mostly back.
Hardly breaks or beats the RB let alone cross's as mentioned.
Bos has a far better approach and skillset especially going forward as a wingback.

This is my best guess about why players get hate (also known as why I have irrationally hated on players) in no particular order.
  1. Talent; particularly someone who has made it due to talents which are less obvious (ie glamour talents), off the ball runs, work rate, combination with teammates etc. Generally players who have made it through hard work getting the most out of every scrap of ability. Duke and Miller are the obvious current examples, I used to yell all sorts of abuse about Brett Holman for his first touch. The inverse is also true, so guys like Hrustic and Irankunda (Nick Carle was an earlier version) get a pass for gaping holes in their development because the glamour talents are their strengths.
  2. Age; 'what's the point if he is never going to the next world cup'. Leckie is there now, Lucas Neill got to this point. Anyone over 30 is a candidate.
  3. Lack of playing time; this generally applies to more talented guys who are selected because they are just better than the alternatives who are playing. Matt Ryan has had this at a few points, Robbie Kruse when he first moved to Germany was a favourite.
  4. Strikers; I think they are at particular risk of this. Goal scoring is the most important thing but also hard. We haven't had a standout since Viduka then Cahill. Guys with less ability will always have barren patches and people will want them out even if they bring a lot of other things to the table. 'They're in the team to score goals'. Maclaren, Taggart and Duke each bring different qualities but at international level are not good enough to regularly goal score, hence we have bounced between them. Scott Mcdonald was an earlier version of this.
  5. Incumbent burden; over the duration the guys who play a lot will have bad games, bad runs or the team will be losing. These will stick in the mind because everyone watches. The guy trying to get into the team doesn't have this, people might only see his Aleague form where he plays for a winning side, or read that he is playing every week in Europe with no idea about his form. If you have multiple guys of similar ability they can rotate through, have a bad game get dropped, do their time playing well for their club, get brought back in when they have done their time but are still essentially the same player. We have this with strikers and right back. Strain is the current push, he will probably come in, have a bad game and maybe Atkinson will be back up after he has 'played well for City'.
  6. 'Blocking' the inclusion of a young player with 'potential'. Fans love potential, what a player could become has almost no limits (read Moneyball for the best description of this). Behich with Bos, now maybe Gersbach (for some reason), Boyle (or anyone really) with Irankunda, Duke with anyone else, Lucas Neill with every defender in Aus at the time.
  7. No value on experience. FM/FIFA effect. You just pick the best guy, give the team the most stats and they win the match. The 75 caps don't increase his pace so aren't worth anything. If you pick a 'dream' socceroos side and it has less then 100 caps total. If you're playing against Saudi for a WC place in front of 100,000 screaming men, you want someone who has done this before.
  8. Punchable face - The Robbie Kruse rule. People hated him for no reason. Watching his early Aleague games, blokes cut him in half every match. There were a couple of season in Germany where he was the most fouled player in Europe.
There might be other reasons I haven't thought of. I think Behich ticks 1,2,5,6,7 (maybe 8?). Justified for a lot of hate. If he were also a striker who wasn't getting game time we could get him arrested.

This is the risk of leadership group immunity. Same with Irvine. You don't need to start every game and should even have time outside a squad if you're not delivering. It's done to others who deserve to be in.

When Australia played England in 2003, the commentary said most of the 11 are essentially automatic starters for England. That was their problem.

I think for a period there he was well below his best, and I was one that felt he was no longer deserving of a spot in the squad. That said, I reckon he's had a really solid last 6 months, and I actually do think he's among our best options now in that spot on recent form.

The last window was an improvement. Higher up in attack to suffocate the opponent and the defence was good against Indonesia.

Bahrain away saw a lot of backpassing and he didn't start against Japan.

Bos and McGree against Saudi were hopeless together. Typical stepping over each other. Same is said for Goodwin and Bos. I think Bos needs an entire wing back space for himself and a much narrower parter in a 10 and double striker.

Not a bad general outlook as passionate supporters we are.
I'd say Frustration is more appropiate than hate towards X players - well for most of them haha
Another point is overall we are up against it whoever we play struggling forever to score let alone look convincing time in time out in attack.
Hence frustrations amongst us.
the angst so many unseccessful counters worse when goign forward we slow it down to reset in the meantime the opp have reset defensively.
Kruse like a rabbit in front of headlights yep.
Behich mentions above posts, Mabil is similar for me absolutely does my head in, so many times down the flank final third so many times over cooks it, tries to take on another/last defender and lose's the battle when the play before he should have looked up and nailed a cross or inside pass towards the box to X player when he could have !

Really good thoughts Cunningstunt and very valid. I also agree with some of what you have said Verelli although I cannot get myself to him being one of our best options.

My 'hate' of Behich is ingrained and it takes time to wear that away I think.

For years I saw him make what I felt at the time were mistakes and because of his position any mistake is going to be hazardous at best and most likely creating a goal threat. I cannot name specific incidents, but over time I have felt like "Bloody Behich has cost us another goal" often enough to leave a scar.

Over the same long period, he would be running up the wing into the space that the left wing or forward player wanted to run into, would not pass to that player if they ran into that area themselves, and countless times has turned back when there were good positive attacking options ahead of him.

Some of this may be me calling things mistakes when they are not, or more when they are not actually his fault and he is just the closest to the point of pain so cops it (probably a bigger factor than I know because of my football positioning ignorance and the well proven formula of "proximity to loss = fault").

Some of this may be a paranoid and overly defensive manager requiring that sort of backwards focus play.

For City, now, he is an effective and dangerous weapon running up the wing, getting in behind, and either shooting or picking a good pass. I can almost watch him play for City and ignore my baked on feelings about him.

I mentioned sometime back about how none of my dislike ignored that fact that he bleeds Green and Gold, or his commitment to the shirt and country. Just that enough residue over time cakes on and creates an impression that may or may not reflect the reality.

I watch him these days for the Socceroos and joke about him getting another cap - I am more conscious of my prejudice but it is bloody hard to shift an accumulated attitude.

Matt Jurman and Alana Kennedy are similar victims of layering for me. Jurman was the cause of several big mistakes, goals, and lost games when he played for the Roar so I could not watch him without feeling like his next mistake was just around the corner. Kennedy made a string of mistakes across Matildas games that cost goals (handballs in the box, penalties conceded or tackles not made) so for some time she had caked on grime. I am far more appreciative of her efforts these days.
