World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Just read on the Hearts forum that someone reckons Arzani has turned them down and is going to Hungary...

Why on Earth would he do that?

Hope it's bollocks.
They must remember him when he scored there in 2018.

Playing regularly in a league that's improving with access to European competition may not be the worst thing.

Hope it's Ferencvaros. Big club and a stepping stone to better leagues in 18 months if he kills it.

agreed IF he can adjust !
His achilles heal is getting involved in a league as such for the cushy league here he tends to be lazy, his work rate isn't that high unless its moving ahead/forward down the flank.
SPL is all in, you can't sit back you must get involved, people go on about coachs having Plan B's, players need to change their usual to the league they play in.
His skillset is there, he needs up his anti to succeed I wish him well.
I would hope he would see this as huge challenge to prove for himself and onlookers after suffering very early the unfortunate ACL injury.
Would help greatly if he does well for next years Cup.

I wonder what the Scots think of diving dogs over there. Particularly diving floppers from overseas.

Do Ferencvaros play much Champ league or Europa league football?

That usually guarantees 6 bigger games minimum.

They won the league last season and are in the UCL qualifying 3rd round Champions path. The unseeded potential opponents are European mainstays. They'll get beaten and drop to Europa League I think.

spot on and a thought i forgot to mention was in my head about his oscar play acting.
Yer he'll get found out big time And good, the other learning curve he needs to address about himself.
Can't stand players behaving as such, bloody Behich does it as well.
I know its black arts in some countries and players but its just not us to accpet that kind of behaviour even though in certain moments that went our way we'd take it with glee.

The football hasn't been flashy or a great watch but fair play to Popa after a rocky start he's come in and done a great job in getting us to qualify for the World Cup.

Tougher test lie ahead especially what we do with the ball which is still lacking but a tremendous achievement nevertheless to qualify d

Considering Australia was once a minnow in world football, this is a great achievement, and shows just how much Australia has improved in football over the last 20 years.

That sounds pretty decent.

That guarantees about 12 intra-continental games. 6 in Champ and 6 in Europa?

That's not right though, it's the third
1974 was sort of playoffs because thats how the OFC/AFC qualifiers were structured then. 2 zones with 4 preliminary groups, then semi finals and finals home and away to decide the winner. As OFC nations (only us and New Zealand then) were drawn in a preliminary group with 2 Asian nations you could strongly argue they weren't really playoffs in the modern sense of IC playoffs but as they were head to head contests for the last two rounds you could also argue they were.

Correct - so there is still 3 times that we have progressed without the need for playoffs (2010, 2014, and 2026)

Not sure about the Arzani.. seems like a player who needs a good support structure around him having family around in australia means they are in his ear about taking his opportunities because he hasn't ever really reacted to a coach calling him out.

If he doesn't get minutes his head might drop like it did in Scotland.

That wasn't a hack, he just slipped.

And that is my greatest fear for Arzani - the soft pitches of Scotland are nothing like the hard pitches he grew up on. It's why so many Aussies get soft tissue injuries over there.
Yes, I remember now. He came on as a sub when Celtic were five goals up and tried to do some fancy tricks.

'diving dog' thank you.

Besides which I didn't mention Arzani.

Have you drawn your own conclusion?
It was pretty obvious who you were referring to by the context of the conversation. I don't like diving either fwiw but calling someone a dog is ott.

Arzani at 26 has a decision to make - go for money or not. I can't see him improving that much, he has been at numerous clubs, had many different coaches and yet they all end up with the same product - admittedly, Diles probably got the best out of him. So he joins the coulda, shoulda club.
