World Cup Qualification Thread for 2026 - Socceroos/Asia

Interestingly, Robbie Keane was appointed Ferencvaros manager in January of this year. He would know plenty of Aussie players from his time at Leeds (when Kewell and Viduka were there) and ATK in India among other clubs and just general socialising. The fact that Keane has Aussie connections and speaks English makes me think it probably is Ferencvaros. And also that Ferencvaros are Hungary's big club and have CL football and an English speaking manager would be attractive for Arzani.

It was pretty obvious who you were referring to by the context of the conversation. I don't like diving either fwiw but calling someone a dog is ott.

Yes it was pretty obvious. I was being disingenuous.

Diver = dog.

In your opinion.

Arzani at 26 has a decision to make - go for money or not. I can't see him improving that much, he has been at numerous clubs, had many different coaches and yet they all end up with the same product - admittedly, Diles probably got the best out of him. So he joins the coulda, shoulda club.
It took him a really long time to recover from his injury and get back to somewhere near his best. Very intelligent player - could do a Mooy and be a late bloomer at a higher level.

Sliding doors moment of the campaign? Either that Saudi goal chalked off of Indonesia hitting the post with the penalty.

True. Mooy was almost 26 when he joined Huddersfield who had just been promoted to the EPL. But I never heard anyone say that Mooy had attitude issues or ever threw a tantrum on the pitch.

I'd be happy just to get out of the group.

I think Grazor has data that suggests that the Socceroos have few players playing in Big Five UEFA leagues, and the other 30 odd big clubs in more modest UEFA leagues, than most of the other World Cup teams when it was 32 teams in the comp.
yeah on the old forum, if you rate a team by minutes in big 5, Australia has a much higher elo than you would expect for some reason

The WC hosts are in a pickle that doesn't surprise me.......
Afterall it is dominated by MLS players with just 7 players in EU in various leagues.
Poch has got a job to do.
the MLS is pretty decent these days to be fair, probably similar quality to the austrian bundesliga

Watching their national team games, they don't seem to bleed for the shirt like they used to, they are getting beaten in some basic effort areas which is surprising

I keep seeing people call Arzani a diver or tantrum chucker but I've never noticed anything. Indeed I have seen him fouled constantly and get nothing from the ref - hence his incredulity sometimes.

Thing is, for me, he's one of the X factor footballers I most enjoy watching - and I am very far from being a Victory fan.

I'm going to say the Saudi goal being chalked off since it came first., and ultimately that's who our qualification battle came down to

Agreed.

Another one was Irankunda hitting the post with a thunderbolt against either Bahrain or Indo and the ball then hit the keeper and could have gone anywhere.

Might have meant a massively different campaign - not least for Arnie and Irankunda.

retited and on a recreational forum

I'm a professor and I stop caring about spelling and grammar on a recreational forum

for instance in this post I spelt retired retited...
In general I agree with you. However when someone frequently uses grandiloquent words to communicate on a recreational forum, then in my opinion they have forfeited the option to use poor grammar and spelling.

Wasnt he the one, after being fouled in the GF, who was waving his hand over his mouth and holding his nose implying his opponent had bad breath or was talking shit??? Sure seems like a gentleman to me.
