Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

Congratulations again South Melbourne.

I have to say it is refreshing once again to watch a game which is decided by the whistle and not the camera.

Every centreback forearm across the neck, every thump in the back and every trip and grapple my abused perceptions immediately think 'VAR will pull that up'. It is easy to forget how sanitised a game is when it is controlled by cameras and faceless analysis.

A hard fought battle that you held on for this time.
Swings and roundabouts... we had a fairly decent shout for a pen but you get used to those being waved away with no VAR.... I really hope we NEVER have it in the Championship...

AS for the match, really pleased with the effort from the whole squad last night... we played prgamatic, foot on the ball football, simple triangles up the wings with the odd diagonal and created chance after chance.. Yes perhaps Maxs goal was a bit of an "event goal" but a fair result for us I think... First time all season we have played a full 70-75 mins of controlling the match... FORZA HELLAS..

Pope looked a decent prospect
He is a flashy young thing.... his decision making sometimes lets him down but he "mongrels" the midfield and helps us regain possession - which he is sometimes the cause of losing :(..

Another bright young spark to keep an eye on is Skapoulas... 17 year old winger came on at the hour mark ... he WILL play Aleague in the coming years.....

Great win but sour note to see that what I told everyone weeks ago is coming to fruition.

Players not being paid … why did Mells leave …

Will he be the only one … hmmm stay tuned.

David Clarkson also left for the same reason, family decision is the lie they fed you.

Mid table finish. Average and not good enough for this club but then again we were relegation bound a month ago. So I’ll reluctantly take it but the board can GAGF regardless.

And lastly the skops with their Alexander Tifo. Just remember we own their airspace. Na pana gamothoi
If the players arent getting paid and put up a performance like that perhaps we should NEVER pay them again ....... why you bother with the lies I don't know?

That was a massive win. Three points and a big win over a rival.

Great crowd of 3-4K, plenty of noise and great atmosphere. Great celebration scenes at the end when Mikkola scored the winner. It was ridiculous what he did and he’s pulled off a memorable goal.

Social club after the match was pumping. Always helps when you win.

The boys played well. Sinisa set up the team right. The young kids Francou, Leech, Pope, Skapoulas were good value today.

The referee today was a joke. No consistency. How he missed 2 penalties in the space of 10 seconds in the first was laughable.

Just glad to see the team turn things around. Let’s try and get to the transfer window with another 2 wins. That should be enough to stay up and then we can bring in reinforcements for the Australia Cup fixture.
WHAT A GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!! Still buzzing after last night.. Its amazing what a derby win does to your week :)

If we beat dandy thunder and hume next 2 games we will start taking a peek at the top 6. We are 9 points out now but if we win the next 2 the gap will close.

As it stands the primary focus is 2-3 more wins to ensure safety. Tonights conversation would be very different if we lost, and we know Oakleigh will fold to st albans next week and victory will likely beat port at bundoora.

Not sure we can win the next 2 but if we take out Thunder next week dont think we can go down.
Chalk and cheese to where we were 2 months ago.... Top 6 is a bridge too far I feel but relegation is now, finally, in our hands... 2-3 wins seem "comfortable" at this stage...

It highlights again (2 weeks in a row) that we are relying less on the established players at the moment.

We took off Mikkola and Mells against Dand City, and the young ones did the job.
This week we took off Brennan and again the young ones did the job.

I think it showed abit of tactical "flash" from Uncle Buck to be honest.. He played Andy as a #9 to press instead on Bonada, and when Andy tired which we all knew he would, brought in Skapoulas on the wing and put Bonada in to "rush"... The young pups have served us very very well this season and its finally paying off... Get as a decent striker and we wont be embarrassing come October I reckon.

"Simple, pragmatic football" does your skill level a disservice.

Your wingers constantly receive balls under pressure and with no space. Your fullbacks pass the ball to them under those conditions with the confidence they will receive and control the ball while maintaining possession and most of the time they do - executing passes that require touch control, awareness and vision constantly.

From my little observation the pitch is much smaller at this level - closer, tighter and more physical marking, very little of the strategic pulling back and holding structures and giving two thirds of the field to the opponent. Every foot (about a third of a metre for the youngens) earned.

"Simple football" is a fine showcase of the level of skill in your team and a joy to watch.

I wasn't suggesting any of the goals should be pulled back or that either side got a free ride - just noting that my perception has been heavily doctored by the existence of VAR.

Simple and pragmatic in the sense of what preceded it mate. Esteban ball was NOT fun to watch when it wasn't working ....

Strangely Preston played quite a bit of that direct, hoof it long last night and our defence was pretty comfortably swatting it away.... Lucky we have goalkeeper sent from heaven

Hasn't he saved our bacon AGAIN this year?!

When i saw Oakleigh lost, i thought to myself, i bet the delusional South Melbourne supporters will think we lost this on purpose because we're betting on the other team or we're doing this on purpose so that South get relagated.

Boy was i not shocked at all to see the South supporters here posting exactly what i thought.

Is it really that hard to believe that the better team on the night beat Oakleigh? Why is it always a conspiracy with you lot...
