A Trip Down Memory Lane

What was your first date. Mine was when I was 10 and asked my 10 yr old neibor if she wanted to for a walk in a close by park. First time I held a girls hand and had my first kiss too that day.
Anyone else feeling a little uncomfortable heading down this path on a public forum?

The interesting thing about the Atlantics was that though they played "surf music" the members of the band had ethnic backgrounds-Greek,Croatian and Hungarian.
Other groups I loved included The Loved Ones,Taman Shud ,The Easybeats and The Masters Apprentices

Taman Shud. That's a name I haven't heard in ages.

Yer alot my era as well above, Thorpey was a little before my age of getting into music but his Most People I Know was friggin legendary tune !
Easybeats another trail blazer.
Better add in Russell Morris < though wasn't mad about him - friggin LRB I used to think a bit soft but damn the tunes and success damn impressive !
USA success I couldn't believe how well damn Air Supply had done.
Gawd Sherbet, the countdown fav, pretty good tunes.
I even got to appreciate Squeak later, JPY haha
You know who I never appreciated back in those days, Farnham.
Rock abviously was my pref so never did I care about him - untill one day at the Supercars Homebush we stayed back to listen more so Hunters & Collectors who have some great tunes.
Well low and behold Farnham came on - I did like the Voice it is a great tune but wow what a showman live, he did blow my socks off then I got it.

Saw Farnham at Adcock Park in Gosford. He did a heavier version of Long Way to the Top than AC/DC. I must admit I always thought the almost 9 minute version of the It's a Long Way There (LRB) was one of Australia's best songs (usually only hear a radio edit). Stevie Wright with the Easybeats and solo as well was great.

Saw Thorpey supporting Deep Purple. Gawd they were loud - I thought someone was not only attacking my ears but thumping my chest.

Another obscure one was a Northern Beaches band - Mushroom Planet.

Farnham did LWTTT heavier version than Bon and the fellas ? OMG that would have been surprising but if thats the way you felt sure must have been brilliant.
Ol Stevie, yer they were good pity he had a tuff ending.

Mentioning Deep Purple, christ I still have Machine Head LP in perfect nic, I saw on the news feeds ol Ossie performed his last attempt on stage the other day.

I don't recall seeing Mushroom Planet though maybe I did, I see they frequented Narrabeen Antler where i went heaps of times incl Mody Dicks/Whale Beach/AV RSL used to have live gigs and another regular live jaunt Bryants/Manly Vale Hotel.

Mum at church today told me when she first moved to australia they had to stand up in the cinema before a movie and sing God save the queen

Anyone else have that experience? Thats mad haha

Yeah I had an older colleague who said that. Different times as a lot of schools had music class with national songs and choirs. First 20 years post WW2 people were particularly thankful for what those who served had done and it was celebrated through music and song.

Mind u i find it easier to show respect during advance australia fair than if we are borrowing another countries anthem

God save the King is still Australia's royal anthem and used at ceremony.

Advance Australia Fair is musically an excellent anthem and my biggest issue is if it is sung at a slow pace or some if those horrible musical versions are used. The FIFA version is one of the best with the right litch pitch. I personally don't buy into the ridiculous lyric debates about 'girt'. Most anthems were written long ago or are about conflict or other mythical matters so I'm glad Australia has something of a modern, positive, celebratory anthem.

With the swimming on right now you hear plenty of nice ones. Personal favourites include Canada, Wales and The Netherlands.

It is a really charming anthem and the word girt means we can be self depracating

I think a lot of people maybe didn't have a proper first arranged one. My generation did a lot of mingling at parties and socials and you maybe had a partner in the school yard but so many wouldn't do anything outside of school or on the weekends.

As an adult I guess it was often hanging at the beach and then a bar or cafe. Met my long term part at 21 unbelievably.
