but they are in line for a top 6 play off currently 4th with 2 games left - this will affect every club in VPL1 points wise
Sorry I meant auto-promotion but yeah you are right... who knows what this is going to do? APL destroying true football at every opportunity. So their last official game was at Oakleigh? How appropriate.

I vaguely remember the NSL had AFL linked teams such as Carlton and Collingwood. Similar to what we will see with APIA.

Would anyone know/remember why these failed, and would they work in this day and age? Could this be a way forward with NRL and AFL clubs?

Ill give you a hint... The "brains" behind WU was involved with Carlton....

Just keep it a 12 team league until the next TV deal cums, then maybe we can add a team from QLD and ACT or NZ.

I think its time to do away with the concept of creating A League teams from scratch. Teams entering the A League should have some form of existence prior to gaining an A League License. The only exception I would make is some teams from an existing NPL area not already represented combined to make an A League Club.

TBH what’s happening w/APIA isn’t an exact analogy bc it’s a collaboration between them and Wests Tigers’ sponsor/owner, not Wests Tigers themselves.

To answer your questions, frankly that’s been covered before on other threads and the answer to your first one is far too lengthy to go into here.
The second though, is pretty straightforward: it makes no difference whether it’d now work or not if there isn’t even the institutional-will on their part(particularly re. the AFL) to give the concept another go.

So, like Association clubs that compete in NSW and VIC (and until next season, ACT)?

The exception I’d make is for a Tasmanian side representing the whole state(and the time for FFA/APL to strike on that is now; take advantage of the AFL’s expansion fuck-up there). That being said, they don’t have to join the A-League straightaway; they can start out in The Championship, as can any other created-from-scratch sides representing regions such as Geelong, Ballarat, Townsville, Cairns etc.
