Poppa Out

I'm mostly being facetious but Poppa's tactics drain any joy from the game.

The tactics are set up to be defensively sound and cover a weak right back.

I'd prefer to see us play to our strengths rather than weaknesses.

Get a back four in, play some more technical midfielders and select our best goal scorers.

Any more of this and we're honestly in trouble.

This old former sweeper doesnt mind a bit of defensive football :D

But yeah hopefully we get luongo robbo and toure soon. Robbo of course needs to make himself available

Some balance is needed. If we go to a back four and bring in Balards screening I still think we have good defensive coverage, but it opens up a lot more options offensively.

Got to get Miller and Irvine out. Neither can play a decent ball. Miller had an alright second half but isn't a solution. Irvine couldn't dictate any play. Add 2 good midfielders and we look better.

I wish we had a clear style of play at all levels starting with the youth, not much can change overnight with Popa as he needs work time but its clear he's working the best he has got available possession based football or not.

Erm we mandated that bollox 15-20 years ago (Baan, Berger). It's what led us to the tragic state we are in today.

We do though? Doesnt look pretty tho when our prime age players arent technical enough. Younger players are significantly better once you get to birth years 2003 and younger. It will take a while for those players to hit their prime tho (and who knows how many end up playing for us)

When he doesn't pick Nizz or Irankunda he deserves everything coming his way.

That was dross.
When I look at the situations on the pitch, the selections hurt ourselves. Imagine Irankunda, Arzani, Nisbet among many more not there in those spaces.

Miller was our main avenue for attacks. He tried to minimal effect. O'Neill did alright but Irvine was nowhere in a play building sense and once Hrustic went off we lost any sort of link up play. Once again too disjointed and we're not picking our best players.

Joeys couldn't even score v Indonesia.

I wish Ange was back as well.

I would disagree we are in trouble. I think we deserved a win last night and our finishing cost us. Four really golden chances and a few other really good ones. Most times this is a comfortable two goal win.

No doubt the first 25 minutes were awful in possession. But they still did not concede any really big changes during this period.

To be fair there has been such a lack of time together so it can only become clearer. The better players need to be part of it though.

If Piscopo maintains his current form he'll be worth trying next window.
I raised this the other thread so we might just disagree about this selection philosophy. But if he can do this for the entire season sure consider him. But I don't think a good month in Aliga warrants a call up. Two good seasons and a strong start in Europe and I am happy for the call up (Balard), otherwise I'd rather see some consistent good performances over a longer period of time.

By in trouble I don't think qualification is out of our hands. I do think if we maintain the current formation and players we're going to struggle. We lack too much in midfield, rely on not-quite-right players for width (Miller), and have left our best finishers out of the squad. We're relying on luck to score. This formation (I dislike) but may work with some personnel tweaks that give us a more proactive chance to score.
