(probable) retirement announcement of Simon hill

The offending quote was
"and btw, I never EVER said SM were “too Greek” - don’t ever put me in that basket. I said your club strongly identifies with your Greek roots, and therefore why would New arrivals from Asia identify with that? Very different."

I kept the bold font he had
Oh I see, so Simon was actually wanting South Melbourne to grow by ONLY appealing to Greek people... what a visionary...

At the end of the day, presuming to speak for a group of people you have no knowledge or connection with and judging what they prefer to connect to based on your own preconceptions of them is dishonest at best, passively racist at the worst... While I don't think Simon meant to be racist, he doubled down in a spat instead of graciously accepting that YES, indeed, South Melbourne (and many other effnikz clubs) can and DO appeal to people outside of their ethnicity ..... as do Aleague franchises that appeal to people outside of their geographic marketing zones.

in the case of greek clubs in melbourne it probably doesn't matter whose right since the Greek population is big enough to support a big club.
Not really the point though.... what do well tell the Indian, Asian, Anglo, African kids that were in the stands at the cup game last night at Lakeside all bouncing up down by the fence because their U12 (an Anglo kid btw) coach was getting his senior debut? Sorry Simon Hill reckons only Greeks can follow Hellas?

Sorry mate, enough this divisiveness needs to end one day no?

Not contractory, I think they can absolutely both be correct statements, don't you? Some have joined South, some stay away? Seems common sense. It's not about wants, just stating how it is. Doesn't mean I like it nor agree ☮️
All good mate, not an attack on your OR Grazor, Im sure you both know me well enough by now to know its just a debate....

I guess it just saddens me that its 2025 and this is STILL a conversation point....

do Indians watch A-league or NPL? I think they're more interested in cricket.
If this is a serious question, yes there are heaps - not at Aleague or NPL though, THATS why pro/rel is so important.

I'm with ya mate. It gets to me when people try to tear us all apart for no reason. Can the Championship just start already and help bring the game together! Absolute torture waiting haha.

yeah still useful to know what your pressure points are since I was (to be honest still am) confused why it was labelled racist rather than just wrong/ignorant/annoying or something lower on the scale or crappiness and was enough for Pete to completely write him off (even if he doubles down) when he seems to have a lot of positives.

Obviously you haven't written him off, and I'm not criticizing Pete either, just curious what the triggers are. I remember an article by Stuart Hill (?) at the roar which was dubbed racist because he said he felt uncomfortable as the only anglo at the game. Definitely seemed weird, but didn't seem racist to me. Then again I'm probably a bit oblivious. After all I'd need a club I care about much more than the roar to get cast out of the national comp because Queenslanders are too bogan to appeal to "real Australians" to be marketable to understand :D

FWIW not Asian heritage but decades ago I went to a few SM games and I could not understand a word being said around me. Didn't go back.

That’s pretty lame excuse though.
You’re there for the game first and foremost.
I have never cared people speak their own language around me especially at a game of football.
It would never be the bases of a decision not going again if the game was good - if it wasn’t good then I’d think twice not going next time having checked results in between.

Not really. Watch any game and goals are celebrated or mourned as a tribe. As a neutral you pick up the vibes around you.
The only people who watch the game in an almost emotionless state are scouts and coaches (at least they try to).

I just really hope it gets to the point in our football journey where everyone involved can debate the merits of the club on the field and not who is plastic and who is a foreigner.

Yes, yes dont howl in protest, I am as guilty as everyone else on this I know .... :)

so your answer (to my question) would be no, not yes
Well I really cant tell you about Aleague demographics but I have seen heaps of South East Asian looking people at NPL level so presume they DO like footballl... They have their own football clubs and associations as well which is what I linked for you.

If you are going to be uncharacteristically anal in your questioning and want to enquire strictly on Aleague and NPL level fandom and NOT Australian football in general then all I can answer is:

Yes, Indians do watch NPL...
Dont know if they watch Aleague....

the vibes can either be ignored or join in, when a goal scored the team you prefer to win by clapping away or going/saying well done.
I get why people don't go to a game due to hostility that I agree with but because of not speaka de enlish I don't get that if I read your comments correctly, well that is what you said.

The mention of hostility, WSWRBB, I won't go to their games from long ago for the random abuse my wife and daughter got and felt threatened, then I get not going to XYZ's games.

As we all know all those "effnik" clubs were renowned for asking for your greek, croat, slav maco, italian passports at the door... no passport no entry! Only exception was that huge amount of vocal poms that always managed to somehow get in to south games as main supporters, they must ve come with the ground _ lets ask any of them how unwelcome they felt perhaps! 😛😛🤪🤪

Ill concede that "racist" may be a touch heavy handed and "dissapointing" a more apt description.. In simple terms (and Im struggling to find an example without insulting anyone) If I was to say:

" I hate Pad Thai because the noodles are slimy and I don't like the flavours, Iprefer Red Pork Curry" Then its a personal opinion based on a, maybe lopsided, but at lest fair preference.

IF however I was to say:

"I hate Pad Thai because its is made by Asians" then that, at least by my definition, is a racist comment ..... no?

That this person had a more underhanded way of saying something doesnt mean he didnt say it.. its all in the essesnce, end of day as mono and others have tried to correctly point out. He was just clever enough to veil it better than others, simple as that..
Proof is in the actions end of day and for me i have nothing positive to remember of him so good riddance!

Journalistic integrity wouldve dictated a statement at some point as a huge proponent of the chages he supporterd, that "we tried and failed, bygones be bygones with the old guard, we apologise lets all get behind a pyramid to grow the failing game as a whole without further division, fixing past mistakes" ...

More of that divisive guard gone is what the game here needs now!

Yeah I guess that was my main "beef" with the whole situation.. As the "voice" of football for alot of young impressionable people and potential fans, he chose to basically say he doesn't think Asian fans would be welcome at our club....
