2026 UEFA WC Qualification

How to qualify to the World Cup from the Nations League?


Divided into 12 groups, six have four teams and six have five teams. Teams will play each other home and away as usual. The top team from each group qualifies automatically for the World Cup, with the runners-up going into the play-offs with four Nations League teams.
 
England 3-0 up against Latvia in second half stoppage time at Wembley after leading 1-0 at half time. As it stands Tuchel will have two wins from two by the end of this international window.

This is one of the biggest monstrosities of WCQ to me.

So the highest four Nations League group winners that are not already in the top 2 of their WCQ group, advance to the the playoffs.
This means that Portugal, France, Germany and Spain - should they have a nightmare WCQ campaign, are assured of at least the playoffs.
On the other extreme of things example, it means that if the following countries all reach the top 2 of their WCQ group, Northern Ireland, North Macedonia, San Marino and Moldova will automatically make the playoffs:
  • Portugal
  • France
  • Germany
  • Spain
  • Czech Republic
  • England
  • Norway
  • Wales
  • Romania
  • Sweden
They could have just made things so much easier, and had 8 groups of 6 or 7, with the top 2 qualifying directly. Minimum of 10 games to qualify (rather than the 6 we have in some groups this time around).

Norway beat Italy 3:0. North Macedonia 1 Belgium 1.

Silly format with some teams having played 3 games and others just 1. Not sure how else to do it but the tight calendar makes it rushed.
 
If Norway can win in Estonia they're in dreamland with 4 home games in a row and then a final game in Italy where the situation may already be clear.

Embarrassing.

But to me, this just further shows what a joke of a competition the Nations League is. How can a team be ranked 9th in the world, but not qualify for 3 world cups in succession - with their ranking really based off their form in this joke competition. Italy should have been in Pot 3 for this - not a seeded nation.

Where have Italy raked in the ranking points? Tournaments? Some Nations League?

You'd fear Croatia way more than Italy these days.

Probably nations league - they only got to the first knockout stage at Euros, but have made the Nations League finals the last two editions

Scotland's 3-1 loss to Iceland coming in the first of two friendlies this international window as they don't have World Cup qualifying matches until the September window.
