Apia to get cash injections.

Does this club have any chance to compete with Sydney FC?

A deal like this indicates the club would like to compete in the top tier.

This is just my personal opinion and maybe it’s overly harsh, but this is the sort of thing I’ve always found off putting re APIA as someone with a “shared heritage”. The constant willingness to completely rebrand, rename, move home venues etc at a whim. Within the last 20 years They’ve been APIA Leichhardt, APIA Leichhardt tigers, Sydney tigers, APIA Leichhardt tigers, APIA Leichhardt, then flirting with the idea of renaming themselves “inner west tigers”, then now “wests APIA”. Back and forth between Leichhardt oval and lambert park, not by necessity like Sydney olympic who don’t own a ground, but of their own free will.

We’re not talking about updates to the crest or whatever, you’re talking about major rebrandings. For historic clubs, consistency is key and is the selling point. That’s not to say clubs can’t be refreshed or dynamic and evolve over time, but there are ways of doing it. Renaming the club should be considered very carefully and multiple parties consulted and it should be done very rarely if ever. I know in the NSL era these sorts of things happened, but that was different as it was done under duress from the people running the game

But hey, again, that’s just me. Maybe I’m overly OCD about this sort of thing
Nothing wrong with rotating between Leichhardt and Lambert, Lambert is a disaster if they ever get more than 80 people to a game

The sentimentalist agrees with you also and im sure i would baulk at the thought of it happening at my club by our own hand (as you said external entities did force it upon us time and time again) .... now that im older (the wiser part remains disputable mind you) id say that at this time (if done correctly and respectfully and above all it gets us closer to our end goal (h&a/p&r) then so be it!

There are ways to continue to pay homage to your past while adapting to the current settings and future needs!

Its about being smarter now!

They’ve consistently had APIA or Tigers in their name……..

Also a valid point of view

I don’t really like team names without a place / region / suburb in their name.

Personally would have preferred “Wests Leichhardt FC” and just have APIA as their unofficial moniker like how MacArthur FC are known as the Bulls

With all due reapect to Apia........Marconi and South are different beasts, overall more succesful, more popular, thus more cemented 'bled on' identities which dont adjust well to change!
I’d put Melbourne knights (despite their current situation), Sydney united, Sydney Olympic etc broadly into that category too. Not to retread old ground, and also with all due respect, as I say, I always like to differentiate within the title of “ex nsl” there’s also the subheadings of clubs which at some point played in the nsl, and clubs which made it all the way till the bitter end.

Fully agree!

I agree with you to a small degree but I remeber when SOuth was playing with the whole Souther Cross bullshit Al;eague bid... my only sense of comfort was the fact the South melbourne would remain as an entity in the NPL ... Now, Im pretty adamant that any name change would HAVE to incorporate the name South Melbourne (and or Hellas)... anything else would be a travesty. Aleague ambitions and H and A pro/rel be damned.... SMFC is an institution... no compromise.

Exactly that was my point also!
I would never change our name (vehemently hated 'lakers' and southern cross wasnt somethingni subscribed too _ outside the idea we would then rebrand back!) but what we have seen over the years such as the slight adjustments to logo as long as it was respectful to our history (which was already done mind you and always hopefully a thing to never happen again) to sell the brand "SMFC" if smart and warranted (like our current logo) wasnt a major issue in the end either!

Dont get me wrong the hellas logo as
per the classic marathon foods and now heritage top wil always remain my favourite, but the current one is just as cemented on as the original and id feel naked without it now also! A respecful logo that portrays all i was saying!

100% agree.

In 1978, Western Suburbs SC in Five Dock and APIA-Leichhardt amalgamated their soccer/football under the name APIA-Wests for the 1979 Philips Soccer League season. In January 1979 APIA took full control of the NSL team.
glad you cast back to the good ol days more than me patj.
Alot of history with Wests and APIA.
Its a link that has been for decades as mentioned earlier, don't think we've or more so from my perspective really had much issue our name/brand being tweaked for overall APIA is always in CAPS for starters and the Club has always been run by TR first and foremost for yonks.
I get Glenardo's POV and he's coming from his side of the fence that have never had that I recall changes to their brand/Club.
Despite our tweaks APIA has forged a great fabric behind the bigger NSL Clubs and became a force through soem stellar seasons and to this day under challenging circumstances and we're still there and looking ahead bigtime.
The balance using Lambert/Leichardt really ticks the boxs especially with the coming Leichardt upgrade.
