A-league attendances 24/25

Nobody is arguing that it's still shite seeing your favorite players leave. Hardcore fans will stick by it but you won't get the casuals
You also lose the casuals when you get relegated or are playing shit ... the point is we NEED to get to the point where the majority of fans are rusted (through thick or thin) on club fans... you can't (as the FFA and now APL are finding out) rely on "casuals".

When Figo left Barcelona for Real Madrid I am willing to bet that that no more than 3 people world wide (and they certainly weren't Spanish residents) followed him across.... Players are temporary, club is eternal.
I'm sure the bandwagoners swapped the shirts like they do with mpappe and messi these days

If your south players kept leaving and went to Melbourne knights you'd get sick of it. The comp is boring when players move around so often it means nothing. Why I loved Gerrard he was loyal
Yeah mate, I get what you are saying but It wouldnt change how I feel about the club or how much I attend.... 3-4 years ago we lost a whole bunch of fan favourites to Oakleigh - Oakleigh of all scummy clubs ... no ill will (except to Foshini the POS) because players are employees, they need to make a living.... They are no more important to a club than the backroom staff, the groundskeepers, the lady at the turnstiles, the bar girls serving in the social club, the ball boys ......

Having a great player at you club year after year is a luxury and shouldn't be an expectation. It's nice when it does happen, but we are in a different era now. It's important to remember, most players are not fans of the club they play for. Gerrard was a fan which is probably why he was so Loyal, but that is a bit of a rarity. It's a really weird hypocritical mindset we tend to have about players. Hypothetically, let's say you have a mate who is a doctor currently working at St Vincent's. If he told you that he got offered a position at Royal Melbourne with 30% more money, I'm sure you'd be super happy for him and would not question his loyalty in the slightest. However when a football player does the same thing, we get all shitty and behave like toddlers. Competition points are all the matters, not the individuals that helps win them.

it was only the other week they had fights outside the stadium, footage can be found online. (MV v SydFC)
ol Sutho turning the blind eye possibly, countless issues walks from central to SFS, Cove close by regular pub march to SFS issues, wasn't there knifing issue another time. Many post game combats.
The list is long.

Ok I still disagree but I see all your points

We agree with you mate. Having a player spend his entire career at your club is a special thing. We're just saying that it's easier said than done. Especially in Australia where the A-League, NPL and future NST are all development leagues. That's the reality.
That being said, if it wasn't for Warren Joyce, I reckon Fornaroli might still be at your club scoring goals. It isn't always a question of loyalty but rather it's about circumstance.

The point is casuals are bonus incremental come and go business thats it.
What draws casuals in is you/the regular supporter influence for one, mates joining you, next is good press about the league/match's being tops - casuals wouldn't know any name mentioned but that the league is providing good spirited weekly games that maybe interest them to turn up one day.
Only us invested get emotional about players and they come and go, everything has a use by date as sad as it is and someguyfc touched on it today - loyalty is pretty much gone and depending the league your into.
For eg here, well your comp is transiant like mad, how it needs to survive more so the player, there is no longevity IF your a key player.
EPL you can hold good players for a cycle of 10 ???yrs for eg, Salah is 8yrs with LFC, can't see much more going ahead infact I'll be surprised more than this season BUT we got the best of him and you got to let go but its the badge that matters in the big picture and a new coming Legend steps in his place - re cycle and repeat.
The workhorse's many stay eg like Grant in your league.

Yeah fair enough good discussion lads 👍

The name on the front of the shirt means a thousand times more than any name on the back of it.....
Totally true.

I am not talking about the existing supporters of a club though.

For attracting potential fans without community driven focus/involvement you can either play watchable football or have players that grab interest until the football and club have a hold on you. Can be flashy, tough, playing greater than the sum of their parts, mighty underdogs or whatever.

If the football is dire then you have to ask what you are actually doing in the game as a team and a club - it is about the football at the end of the day.

For the Roar, I like having players who stick with us season after season and play good football. We don't have that player history at the moment and I do miss it.

I would be very sad if I thought we would not see another Matt McKay, Leigh Broxham, or whoever.

A club has to be good enough to earn and deserve loyalty. Football salaries can be good enough not to go for a higher offer simply because it is a higher offer - not for a lot of players of course but for a simple good player who can earn enough at one club to make a decent future in this short career occupation.

If it was commonplace the players who stick would not have the stature they have earned with supporters.

We can still dream...

Mate I feel like that is a separate conversation around the same issue.. Sort of a chicken and the egg thing... My take is that the clubs SHOULD have by now (its been 20 years for Alegaue and 60-70 years for some NPL clubs) the generational rusted on support that DOESN'T need these players to solidify support around...

I sort of disagree, its NOT only about the football on the pitch, "the club" is EVERYTHING off it as well.

About 5000 extra people turned up because they had free tickets that were handed out to registered players in WA in 2024……..

The appetite for Football is huge in WA. Atmosphere was great on Saturday night, great night out. Shame we lost as I'm sure more would have returned this coming Friday had we won. Im amazed we still get 6k despite the club itself being a basket case for over a decade now but im glad we have those 6k rusted on supporters.

For some reason in this state we love "winners". West coast eagles were averaging around 45k a few years back, started losing and are now just scraping 30k. Massive drop.

Wildcats have been consistently good hence there crowds rarely fluctuate, but even the past 3 years they haven't been as good and crowds have slightly dipped.

that is one of the challengers this country has had for as long as I can recall.
Putting aside the old old days when any ground was full because all was new and a "outing" so to speak, 50/60's as we progressed into modern times we had become the mass's only follow when "winners" in many a code.
Its not just WA.

If that was the case anywhere else in the world we wouldn't have ANY football pure and simple....
