A-League Men 24/25 - Round 8

Thought Segecic played very well on the ball, but he roamed all over the pitch as a number 6 or DM,, meaning he probably wasn't in the right position defensively in the Defensive Transitions.

Hence, Western U were able to play through the midfield more easily in their Attacking Transitions.
Segecic is a No.10 or an advanced No.8, even though he was playing deeper he’s more effective centrally instead of out wide.

He probably lacks defensive discipline, but he is excellent on the ball as an attacking mid. He also has explosive pace. Segecic can roam more in the Attacking Mid position.

Despite coaches preferring him as a deep lying playmaker, ATM he does not have the defensive positioning when the other team has the ball to be as effective in the defensive mid role. It contributed to Sydney's gaps, which Erogenous Zone astutely observed observed at ground level - live.

I've watched Segecic a lot fo tthe U 23s and think he has massive talent. I think he will be a superior replacement for Hrustic in the Socceroos in the not too distant future.

What is impressive at SFC is the defence is young and inexperienced, yet brimming with domestic Aus talent. Surprisingly many of the attacking imports at SFC, do very little hard graft. They are good players on the ball, but don't tend to do the hard work most of the Aussie counterparts do off the ball, particularly in Ball Possession Opposition and Defensive Transitions.

If SFC they had an experienced 29-30 yo, like a Wilkinson or Sains at Left CB, it would help organisation enormously. Popovic is a rugged ball winner though and not too bad on the ball either. Courtney- Perkins was preferred to Popa by coach Vidmar at left CB for the Aus under 23s. I thought he was our best player. C-P is very versatile.

Scouting reports have deemed that Matthews is weak in the air. I disagree after watching him closely for the Socceroos and appraising all his 1v1 duels. He has immense talent. He only looks about 14!

Another feature of this round was all the goals scored by young Aussies.

Waddingham scored a classic, high quality striker's goal, from a difficult position against WSW.

Memeti, Botic and Archie Goodwin all scored rippers too.

Milanovic looks potent around goals ATM, and should soon be in the Socceoos squad. Unlike the SFC foreigners in attacking positions, he does good defensive work too. He executed some lovely sliding tackles on his non- preferred right foot.

Perth are terrible, no player seems to know the triggers for the press, its a disorganised rabble that leaves a very poor defence exposed. The consistent fitness excuses and weekly promises of player resets don't inspire any confidence.

Recruitment has been beyond terrible, the only surprise is that it took to round 8 to push Canga to the airport. I've seen better centre backs playing socials.

Welcome to the forum, Muzza.

I feel for Glory ATM. There are 6 bench sitters for other A L clubs who would bolster PG's playing performances. They are too good to be benched and it would be better for Aus interests for them to be playing regularly.

Atalee, Schreiber, Talbot, Piscopo, Kane Vidmar and DDS.

That’s the one thing that I get frustrated with Aussie coaches is how they under utilise young Aussie talent especially in key attacking positions which we often struggled to develop players from, and he’s not the only one either from what I’ve seen but it’s good we got talent coming through in those key attacking positions but they need to be exposed in the best positions.

Just short of one experienced CB at left CB to help organise the defensive shape..
Yep I feel they are a centre back or a DM short from having a compete squad, it will be interesting to see if they go for someone in the January transfer window.
