A-League Mens 24/25 - Round 23 (+Rd 14)

Newcastle parking a huge bus at the moment against a relentless Melbourne City to grimly hang on to their one nil lead.

Even if Jets don't make finals, if they can maintain these good results they are going to put a whole bunch of pressure on that top 6/7. Jets have nothing to lose, but the top 6 have a finals spot to lose.

Melb City played well to win two games but the Jets got some luck and some great goal keeping to keep their season alive.

Sometimes the luck goes your way and for the Jets they had that and some, by no point saying this if they can’t back it up again and win against Western United who can cut through teams like Melb City did tonight they got to keep it going

Quick thought during the lighening break - the last few games have been really high quality. I watch a lot of aussies abroad and at the end of the a league season I don't feel like there is much difference between the a league and the weaker divisions in the 2nd tier of europe - Austria, denmark, norway, scotland, switzerland, yet at the start of the season it is well below even league 1. It makes me wonder how much the long off season is killing our ability to improve.....
The teams take ages to get into the speed of things when they get started, not only we should have a longer season by the off season need to shorter too.

Start it in August like the early days and keep the season ending in May and we are good.

Now there is truly a race for 2nd to 6th at the end of this round. All teams need 3 byes throughout the season

Ps|Team................P|Pts|GD..|Byes
02|Western Utd....20|35.|+12|...2 (R24)
03|Melb City.........20|34.|+09|...2 (R23)
04|Melb Victory....20|33.|+08|...2 (R25)
05|Adelaide..........19|33.|+04|...2 (R29)
06|Wanderers.......19|31.|+11|...3
07|Smurfs.............19|29.|+09|...3
08|Macarthur........20|25.|+03|...2 (R26)
09|Newcastle....... 19|25.|+00|...3

So in the next round Melb City get no points etc

Yes they did. And then through lack of fan engagement the fans keep drifting off.

That's not really true at all. Crowds picked up after CFG took over. This was likely due to great on pitch results and an abundance of free tickets. Numbers only really dropped off after Covid. However, the overall average is pretty much the same as it's always been. Their average is on par or better than most other A-League clubs. They get similar averages to clubs like Glory, Roar, AU and Nix.

Melbourne Heart
  • 10/11 - 8,312
  • 11/12 - 9,082
  • 12/13 - 8,560
  • 13/14 - 9,799
Overall average: 8,938

Melbourne City
  • 14/15 - 10,374
  • 15/16 - 11,047
  • 16/17 - 10,573
  • 17/18 - 9,745
  • 18/19 - 8,133
  • 19/20 - 8,310
  • 20/21 - 5,822 (Covid Season)
  • 21/22 - 6,530
  • 22/23 - 6,481
  • 23/24 - 8,488
  • 24/25 - 6,686 (to date)
Overall average: 8,380 (8,636 excluding covid season)

Please don't use COVID as a excuse the club has made many mistakes to lose people's interest

Not an excuse. Just a point in which crowds dropped off for a reason outside of the clubs control. In that same 20/21 season Victory had pretty much the same average as City (5,823). Difference is that MV crowds bounced back the following season a little better than City, but still not great. I don't think any club has managed to return to pre-Covid averages. Maybe only Adelaide.

Heart crowds were climbing from the start, then exploded when City took over. It wasn't until City's fourth season that they began to plummet, exactly when the colours changed. Home crowds minus derbies:

Sorry for the small chart size, it seems to be automatically resizing. I've put last nights match as 2,000 to show how dire it is now. Could've been even less!

The crowd looked far smaller than 2000 (at least from the highlights) last night and although it was mid week and alarming weather, that is a pretty poor turn out....
Anecdotally, Im hearing that a fair chunk of Melbourne City fans are now all in on NPL and the Championship ... @melbcityguy do you know if there is any legitimacy for this to be true?

I have a question… when your team plays WSW at CommBank, does your fan base have a pre-game pub in Parramatta?

Victory haven’t been going to a pub in Parramatta for as long as I can remember… We have drinks in the city, catch the train and go straight to the stadium. But the NT have announced a pre-game pub in Parramatta this time around.

Are they being provocative? Or is this the norm for other teams?

Problem with City is that they've been relatively successful on the field over the past 5-8 years yet there crowds keep dropping.

Roar, Glory, Jets and Nix have been dire for almost a decade now.

Melb City are better off going back to be called Melbourne Heart with the red and white colours, at least keep it real to how the team began in the league.

That is a dire graph. That is a club without a future. Death spiral territory.
