AFC qualifying thread

if there is an argument for a expanded world cup it's this AFC qualifying table.

Some countries are really improving and it's fun to see: Jordan drawing with Korea at home, Palestine beating Iraq and Uzbekistan drawing with Iran in Iran.

I think it's great for football and their fans and if these teams make the world cup would love to see them cause some more shocks

So you dont want to see a tournament of the "best of the best" anymore... just want a couple of dozen feel good stories?

yep and yep, FIFA greed for the $$ no more no less....

I get Club football offshore comps for Clubs to contest but the Wc ?!
Its just a money grab and drags the tournament longer than it needs ot be.

Leave the WC for the current powers and usual suspects - its provided all the needs for years/decades and it not cheapenned.

Set up a new WC for minnows/with respect smaller contries that football is at infancy stages that will never do much but be a number when Grp'd with say Portugal etc or is there already a comp can't keep up with the amount happenning nowadays.

I read they had a match between the two worst teams in the world maybe they can do that again and put it on tv

for eg that poor mob of students archie got the easiest of scoring records.

How are some of these first time nations gonna handle in some case's being rubbed out of the Grp, no wins 50+ goals.
Talking extreme but understand my point.
 
I don't agree on the expanded WC but I'll say this. If Uzbekistan and Indonesia qualify, imagine the support they'll get at their games.

I've always thought about something like a B world cup but it's tricky with the calendar. You can't run it the same time as the regular WC. Yet if the Europa League and Conference League can get a following then perhaps there are enough mid level nations who'd enjoy the consolation. We need to remember many people go for the travel to.

Imagine a 32 team WC in Germany with teams ranked 40-150. I think people would be surprised at the quality too.
 
Got to say the snobbery in Germany is insufferable. This is from a team that exited in the group stage the last two times. The smaller nations will give their all in this tournament unlike the pampered German team the last two times.

This is grounds to me, for Asia to absorb Oceania, and then split into East Asia (Pacific) and West Asia.

Assuming both new confederations would get 5+1 spots each (given they collectively get 9+2) , and using the rankings as a guideline, this is who should/would have qualified this time round:

WEST ASIA
* Iran
* Qatar
* Iraq
* Uzbekistan
* Saudi Arabia
—
* United Arab Emirates

PACIFIC
* Japan
* South Korea
* Australia
* New Zealand
* China
—
* Thailand

Rather than combine it into east and west wouldn't it be easier to just have Oceania have their own run off tournament and then the top 2 (or 4 or whatever teams) get thrown in the Asian confed?

Would be much more palatable to the AFC than Saudi having to visit Tonga or whoever.
