AFL thread

Was it 2009? I vaguely remember it going on during my internship with AFL ACT in 2013.
You might be thinking of the national youth championship? Dunno what it’s called nowadays, but it was known as the TAC Cup back in the day when I was still a devotee of the code.

Foxtel Cup ran from 2011 through 2014 and was meant to continue for 2015 but midweek footy placed too much of a burden on the participating teams so they ended up discontinuing it after four years instead.

They also had a league called the NFL but I can't find any info on it because I can't the American lesgue

The AFL(VFL at the time) actually had a Champions League-style comp in the late ‘70s that pitted the top teams from the different State Leagues against each other. It didn’t last long and supposedly wasn’t very popular w/fans, but its enduring image was an incident at Waverley Park where the automated sprinkler-system went off during a match between Hawthorn and WA club Claremont..

It’s typically misremembered as having been a regular-season match between Hawthorn and Richmond, due to Claremont wearing the same kit as Richmond and also sharing the Tigers nickname.

Anyways, they did bring it back in 2009 under the name ‘Foxtel Cup’ but w/o the AFL clubs taking part; not even their reserve-sides playing instead. It goes w/o saying that’s what did it in after one edition.
There were a number of interstate comps preceding that. In fact going back to the origins of Australian Rules football there was a 'Championship of Australia' but for the most part that was the SANFL v VFL premiers. But in 1972 it finally featured the premiers of WAFL and Tasmania (not sure how they did that) as well.

It went on for a few years although the VFL clubs stopped competing in at some point.

And then the VFL night series effectively merged with it to form the AFC Night Series which had varying levels of interstate participation. It was canned after 1986 as the VFL began its expansion into a national comp. But in 1980 and 81 you actually had all VFL,SANFL and WAFL sides competing alongside rep sides from the weaker states.

It could’ve been all so different if the then-VFL had adopted pro/rel instead of the North American franchise-expansion model they began pursuing in the early ‘80s.

The AFL’s ticking time bomb: The damning numbers forcing the league’s new footy boss to act https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl...-s-new-footy-boss-to-act-20250721-p5mgkn.html
I see they’ve appointed yet another ‘pale stale male’ who would’ve almost def grown up w/the sheilas-w0g$-p00ft@$ mindset towards ⚽

Almost makes you appreciate just how much the mold was broken when Demetriou(token effnik) & McLachlan(relative young’un) each took the reins there…

Although ultimately, they were just as bad in that respect

To be fair they actually got a crowd to it. They shouldn't have gotten anyone
Novelty value - it wouldn't have lasted. AFLW used to get a crowd too. Now it's costing them $50 million a year - and it will only get worse as they seek to play a proper home and away season and get paid equal to the men because they work as hard. Interesting times for the AFL to see how they deal with it.

You guys are going to mad with me but I watched Carlton vs freo with my pommy inlaws and they really enjoyed it. Obviously football is more important to us but there's a place for other sports
